I hope it's okay to ask for this here...

On Monday my 22 year-old son was witness to his step-mother's suicide. To make matters worse she used his hand-gun. She left a husband, two biological sons, 5 step-children (two of which are my son and daughter) and 5 grandchildren.

Needless to say, my son is very shaken right now. My neighbor, a doctor, says he is likely suffering post-traumatic stress. The entire family is staying in hotels and with friends because they can't bring themselves to go back into the house right now. The funeral is Saturday and hopefully afterwards they can all have some quiet time to begin to heal.

Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers...

That's awful and I hope everyone is seeking some counseling to help them through this. It's unimaginable.

My friend is the one who found his mother when he was 19. It really affected him for many many many years afterward. He used to have a thing with ropes but now he's a worker on the golden gate bride and has to be tied off and he mountain climbs. He used to take off every Aug. to go camping and reflect... he's 46 now and I just talked to him after not communicating for a couple of years and he had not gone off in Aug. like he used to. I can definitely notice a change for the better. But it's been a hard long road. I don't think he ever got counseling and he surely could have used it.

There will be a normal part of the grieving process and you must reassure him that it's not his fault. He is not to blame for her actions. And though it be hard right now... time will heal all wounds. If he has a hobby or an interest it would be good to have him focus on something he enjoys and can take his mind of the crud of all that comes with this situation.

It's ok to cry, it's ok to be mad, it's ok to feel all of the things he may be feeling... but the sun will come up tomorrow and the world will continue to spin and eventually, it will be time to move on from the grieving and go forward. And the best thing anyone can do is to take any trials we face in life and learn from them and use what we've learned for good. Don't use it as an excuse for choosing and making poor decisions in life or keeping one from trying and striving for a goal or you won't do yourself, your loved ones, the younger ones looking up to their older family member, or the deceased any favors by failing in life. Success can be marked by the people one touches in their life and not by wealth or fame but by love. Good can come from all things... it really can. Don't loose faith and always believe in yourself.

    Love in Christ,

    Oh sweetie... (((hugs)))

My DH witnessed his mothers suicide at the age of 6, she also used a firearm. She was a very ill woman suffering from PPD and Bi-polar disease.

36 years later, we are still dealing with repercussions. I hope your DS will get into therapy of some sort. Bless his heart, he must be hurting so badly.

You will all be in my thoughts and prayers constantly.
