Tigger, one of my indoor only cats, managed to sneak out early last evening-we have called and called and gone all over our property and part of the neighbors, both last night and this morning. I would appreciate thoughts and prayers- he is declawed, has never been an outdoor cat, and although beautiful, is not the brightest star in the sky - if you know what I mean. But he is much beloved and we want him home, safe and sound.
Thank you!

EDITED TO ADD: 3/27/10 I found his body late this afternoon. He had apparently been electrocuted in the neighbors goat fencing - his body was still in rigor. He was headed home. We buried him under the maple tree- our pet cemetery is there. He was such a good cat- he loved everybody. Thanks so much, everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I truly appreciate them.

I will pray that Tigger gets home safely. My two cats are the just like Tigger, and I'd die if they ever got out and didn't come back.

Oh, I'm so sorry! I hope he comes home soon! I have five indoor-only cats, and I'd be terrified if one was accidentally let outside.

This sounds strange, but I've heard one of the things you're supposed to do if a cat gets out is, if you can, empty your vacuum cleaner outside around your house. It should have his hair and scent in it, so it could help him find his way back!

Thank you, all. One would hope he could hear the roosters crowing, and smell the horses and hear the dang bassett hound- we are very distinct in our neighborhood for smells and sounds.

Does he have a favorite treat? Years ago I had a strictly indoor cat. He was always looking for a way out, but once out he would get scared and go hide somewhere. He loved raw eggs. I looked like a moron walking around the block clinking the fork on an empty glass bowl, but it worked!! Another thing he liked was tuna and would come running at the sound of a can opener. Yes! I did plug it in outside and ran that thing off and on for hours! It eventually worked. Another thing may be to wait until evening when things are quiet, then try these things or just calling him, then stop and listen. I had a cat disappear when it was blizzarding and 40 below at night. I went outside and talked to her, (meowed, and yes I am certifiable) She would answer back would not come home. I just kept meowing back to her and followed her meows. Turns out she was hiding from the storm in some underbrush. I crawled in the snow to rescue her! I hope this helps, otherwise I just proved how insane I am for no reason!

He could be scared or overwhelmed by all the new smells. Do you have a live trap? If so, set this out with some food. Or maybe a box with some bedding/clothing from the house and some food. The familiar scents may give him a safe place to "come in".

I know that awful feeling of having a lost animal.
