Pre-ordering for spring chicks

Meyer/MPC are interchangeable in terms of stock, so go with Meyer if you choose that route. I'm in the boonies so my minimum was 7 chicks. It is more for bantams. When I priced out an Ideal order equivalent to the birds I got this year, I would have ended up with five more birds than I wanted (which I wouldn't have room for). I used MPC for the minimum and have been plenty happy with them, but wouldn't order there again since I know now which breeds I like and want and where to find them.

None of these hatcheries are into humane/organic. They're into quantity and there is NO telling where they're getting their birds. If you want chicks from birds that you KNOW are treated humanely, go to an independent breeder. Wherever you are, there is VERY likely to be a BYC member near you. Post in your state thread and check the "Hatcheries and Breeders" forum to see what's available near you and where you'd have to go to get the chicks you want.

Good luck!

I just ordered my spring chicks, decided to go with MPC because they seem to have the best reputation from my research on this site, my minimum order was 6, I want 4 and my sister in law wants 2 but I was nervous about ordering the minimum and having some die or ordering too many and not wanting them. Plus, I need them sooner rather than later so that when we go out of town for memorial day they will be old enough to be in their coop and used to it and I can have someone come over and feed/water them. Otherwise I will be stressing the whole weekend wondering how they are doing. Anyhow, all that in mind I advertised on Craigslist for the extra chicks and within 20 mins all extra chicks were pre-sold. So I purchased 15 and they will arrive on March 11. I get to pick which ones I want and so does my sister in law and the remainder all have homes lined up. It's a win/win!

My local tractor supply will have some feb 25th. I have ordered eight chicks through our local co-op but those won't come till April. I have a few questions. Will this six week age difference cause problems with the chicks? Has anyone ever bought tractors supply chicks? Are they pretty healthy? What else should I consider? Is this an example of chicken math?
