Pls help - my chicks (5w old) were just attacked while in the run area of their Omelet Eglu. I have 2 dead, 2 missing, and 1 had a wing torn off. What do I do? It’s sunday after 5pm, our vet who treats chickens/exotics doesn’t open until 8am tomorrow and the closest 24hr emergency vet is over an hour away in NYC.

There is exposed bone and wing muscle/tissue, but I don’t see any but the chick seems to be acting ok. Right now we are holding her, covered in a clean towel with a heating pad.

I do not have any chicken-specific medicines, but can put out a call to my community via a FB msg. Or if I can use human supplies, as a mom I have plenty. Please help. My kids are traumatized at losing their two favorite chicks, and this injured one is another favorite.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks, turns out we had two chicks with a wing ripped off. We took them to our chicken vet, one chick with compound fractures needed to be euthanized. The other chick had the wing pulled completely off - but since it was fully gone and at the joint, the vet could clean her up and expects that she will pull through. She’s on antibiotics and oral pain medicine, and for the next couple weeks will be in the house in a small brooder. She’s eating some moistened fermented food and drinking sav-a-chick water and will sit and sleep in our hands. In a couple days if she is doing okay we can bring a chick friend in to keep her company.

My kids decided to rename this chick Lucky - a very apropos name for having been so UNlucky - but it isn’t often a one-winged chick gets a chance at life.

This was an awful attack and we will reinforce the Eglu run with hardware cloth tomorrow. For now, the rest of the surviving chicks are recuperating in the garage brooder. What a terrible experience.

Here’s Lucky this afternoon:
