While loading up the trailer to make a dump run, my dog started going nuts. Then I heard the chickens on the lower part of the property going nuts also. Thinking it might be another bear, I got my bow and my brother-in-law grabed our friends (smith & wesson). We got to the top of the first ridge and we could see a person trying to catch a hen. I went back to the barn for the 12 gauge and some rock salt loads. As he started out the gate the rock salt caught him, he dropped the sack he had with four chickens in it. All he had to yell was I won't do it again and please don't shoot anymore. I have a feeling he is telling the truth.
For I said the same thing when I was caught in a watermelon field as a teen. To this day I won't eat watermelon. Had he came up and told me he was hungry, I would have given him the darn chickens along with some eggs. Probably a lot more than he could steal.

Ummm... I hate to say this... BUT, i'm right there with ya!!! Don't steal from me!!! Come talk to me... I am a generous and caring person til I catch you stealing!!! I would have done the same!!!!! Have you had any others come up missing??? Good luck in the future... Keep an eye out on those babies...

Good ol' rock salt it the patooty stop me from stealing corn one summer! Never been in another farmers field without permission!

I think you cut the guy a break. You could have used the bow on him!!

I'm with you, if he would only have asked.

PS. I have padlocks on my run and coop doors

I agree he got off lightly.

If anyone tried pinchin my chooks they would have a rather large (45kg) Bullarab dog hot on their tail before they could drop the sack

And while she held them my hubby would be making his way over with a big stick or Baseball bat.

why cant people just ask for the food if they need it?
Why steal when if you ask it would most likely be given?

When i was a kid we had a man come up to our farm and ask if he could do some firewood cutting for a sheep.
We said for sure go ahead then packed him up with the sheep, eggs and 2 chooks and some homegrown vegies.

They just have to ask.

At least you only shot him with a salt pellet

Some are stupid enough to get brave and come back.

We had a little problem 2 years ago. We had rented a backhoe for the weekend and were working down on the lower end of our property, left it there overnight.
We came back next morning and it had been tampered with, foot prints all around it, someone had tried to steal it.

We finished what we needed to do, then dug a little burmese tiger pit and parked the backhoe on the side nearest our house, the pit was on the other side in the direction the foot prints originated from.

At 2 a.m. we heard some yelling out that way.
I went out there armed, had my wife call the sheriff, and there was our would-be thief down in that big old hole!

He begged for me to turn him loose, promised that I'd never see him again. I just babysat him until the sheriff got there.

Sheriff pulled up and took one look down in the hole and cracked up!

We got a ladder and got the guy out of the hole and into handcuff's
