Okay, personal experience - I have been shot at with rock salt and it does hurt. I about had a heart attack, I thought I was actually shot!

I don't know how many yards away the fellow was who shot at us, but I can tell you, I never went back to his fields to steal corn.

I would be interested in the proper way to load the shell, also. We have a .12 guage that is splint at the break from an overloaded shell (when the hubby was younger and stupid). It won't handle a full shell without repair, but I bet it could handle a rock salt shell.
