I kind of like @centrarchid's idea. It sounded like to me she said when you buy the new hardwire cloth wire- just put it right over the existing wire and staple it down.. That will go a very long time with out ever being breached.

I use chicken wire on several pens and have been doing it for quite some time. The chicken wire does slow predators down and it need not be used alone. I have been reinforcing the chicken wire mostly when it is near ground level. Other measures are used to keep predators from having easy time messing with the chicken wire.
