Hi all

I’m new to chickens and building a coop. Stuff I’ve found online tells me that to deter digging predators I should lay a 2’ wide apron of 14ga welded wire fence around the coop and run. But the 2”x3” mesh will let rats and mice in, and I’m a bit paranoid about that.

So I was thinking of a few options, have been scouring the internet (including these forums), and have partial but not complete answers. I’d greatly appreciate your thoughts.

(A) I could double up and also lay on the ground an apron of 1/4” hardware cloth along with the 14ga wire...or maybe even replacing the thicker wire altogether. I’d probably use stainless steel HWC—expensive but longer lasting on/in the ground?

(B) Some answers I’ve seen suggesting burying the apron since a predator—and especially a rat—would just dig at the visible edge of the apron and then tunnel across and up into the coop/run. So in option(B) I would bury the apron maybe 2’ deep and then I’d have to run it vertically as well and attach to the structure, forming an L shape underground. But this means digging a 2’ wide and 2’ deep trench all around the coop/run—a pain.

(c) in this option, maybe I’d leave the thick wire apron on the surface outside to prevent foxes/raccoons, and to stop rats/mice I’d lay HWC on the ground inside the run. Maybe, to protect the chickens feet and stop rodents from biting them through the mesh, I’d bury the HWC a few inches. No trench digging—just a bit of surface digging in the run itself.

(D) in this option I’d have a buried L of HWC plus 14ga wire on the outside of the run AND I’d run a HWC bottom buried a few inches under the run. Overkill, but two layers of defense.

THOUGHTS? I’m leaning toward (C) but most everyone talks about an apron or possibly a vertical buried fence...hardlyanyone seems to discuss laying a mesh floor under the run itself

THANKYOU!

I would only lay your wire in an apron 18" around the coop and run. I am building right now and I plan to use 1/2" hardware cloth. If you keep your coop and run free of scraps you may not get any rats or mice or at least fewer of them. I wouldn't use the wire under your run surface as chickens will scratch it up and possibly hurt their feet unless you lay it deep and cover with dirt. My opinion.

A) Just use 1/2" Hardware Cloth, as the 1/4" is a thinner metal most of the time. 1' or 2' up and 2' running on the ground; 2' up and down is mostly suggested here.

B) Yes but agreed that is a LOT OF WORK

C) No fencing inside the coop floor. Chickens scratch and dig, this could lead to injury.

D) See A and C response.

Thanks to all! The run is about 1/2 the area of a trench all around, so it would be great just to bury the HWC under the run floor — less work, especially if I didn’t have to dig as deep as the trench.

certainly don’t want to hurt the chickens’ feet. How deep do they dig? If I bury a full foot down, will they be unlikely ever to find it?

thx

I've read 9+ inches and I've seen mine go about 6 inches. Their as bad as one of my Australian Shepherds.

Then you must need a bigger run :gig
Your run is only 3' wide?

If it's that small--maybe just get stone or concrete pavers, and cover the inside with them. No digging to install them, won't hurt chicken feet, and you can pile bedding and/or dirt on top. If they're at least a foot square, I don't think any predator is going to come in, because the pavers will be too heavy for them to lift. (I am assuming that really large predators do not dig tunnels--a bear or a large dog is more likely to just go through the wire fencing instead of trying to dig under.)

Thanks again to everybody! We’re planning a run sized 4’x8’ (six feet high) plus the chickens will have the ‘run’ (pun intended) of the area under the coop (5x6 incl nesting boxes), about 2’ high. So 62 sqft of run space plus 24 sqft (30sqft incl boxes) coop space for 6 Buff Orpington? Enough? I was hoping so.

So a 2’ wide trench around the run and coop would be 90 square feet. The area under the coop and run itself is 62 sqft. I remember digging out a very small pond and it was lots of work—the idea of digging 90sqft 2 feet deep puts me off! One foot deep for 62sqft is 1/3 the work, I guess...

anyway, thanks for all your views. I will keep thinking...
