Predators in Alabama?

I have seen panthers aka mtn lions while hunting and there have been gator sighting in some lakes just south of Bham. My husband saw a small bear cub about 10 miles from our house several years ago.
But these sighting are very rare. So much so, that if one can be confirmed it makes the 6 o'clock news.
I think if you can protect your biddies from racoons, possums, the occasional weasel, snakes and flying predators you'll be ok.

I look outside to check on them about every 5 mins!! And I don't really think I have to worry about my laying pullet...She's HUGE!!! She used to be a poultry hen (The kind that would be on your dinner plate!!). I love her very much and a hawk won't be able to carry her off.

BTW...5 eggs from her in only 7 days!!

I live near Jasper, Al and I have SEEN bobcats, panthers (black, actually), coons, opossums, snakes, rats, mice, dogs, cats, hawks, minks... the two I have had the most problems with has been domestic dogs and coons. I have heard that we have small black bears around but I have not seen any.

We're up near Gadsden, about an hour north of Birmingham - and there's everything anybody's mentioned on the thread, though it's been about ten years since a bear has been sighted.

I know the coyotes are moving into Trussville, so watch out for that. But your big risk in town, after stray dogs and cats, are the raccoons. You need to make sure the chickens are locked up securely at night.

Oh yes, weasels...they got our neighbor's chickens last year!
