I got a question. Looks like my mare is fixing to foal as her belly has dropped, and her teets are filling up. my question is this....how does a normal teet feel? Her teets now are getting more swollen and hardish, and I have been looking up signs of mastitis...but she is not sore or hot. i hate to say it but should they feel like a womans breasts?

LOL well, when she is close, the teats wont look 'pinched' they will be full and pointing at the ground or away from each other. if you are able, see if you can get some milk from her. not much just a small amount. when the milk is SUPER thick ( like honey) and amber colored that is usually a sign with in 3-4 days sometimes less. when the milk turns WHITE for sure with in 24 hours. the milk going from amber colored to white can change fast and many times people wont notice till the foal is on the ground.

some mares wax (colostrom at the tip of the teat) and some dont. the mares udder will get hard and the teats may also.

With mastitis, the fluid you get out will have the consistancy of cottage cheese and very nasty smelling.

hope this helps!

good luck!

The muscles on either side of her tail will relax and drop, and her vagina will elongate amd look relaxed. She may or may not get "wax" on the end of her teats.

ok in the last 2 days her stomach has dropped, her hind has dropped showing the base of her tail and her vagina might be elongating...i havent checked that close. I have noticed that it looks like she has been having contractions in her stomach. her teets have had wax in between very frequently but none on the nipples

when she is ready the teats will be very full, possible even leaking. mares not breeding will be very small, empty and tucked up high between her legs. 99% of the time horses have zero problems and you go out to feed in the morning and there is a baby running around. some mares do not like company and want total privacy to give birth. labor has 3 stages similar to humans. early labor- uncomfortable, sometimes walking rolling. other times very little activity and the mare seems 100% normal. active labor- hard contractions, water breaks, lieing down to push. after birth- mare licks and nurses foal, afterbirth is expelled, more annoying then painfull like the actual birth.

one thing that is very often found that if a mares water hasent broken yet and she is not into hard active labor she cant actualy stall labor for several days until she has the privacy and comfort level she wants. my gelding annoys the crap out of pregnant and nursing mares. he is always the babysitter and pasture mate for young horses and is very interested in them. the mammas hate that and we have to keep the gelding away for a while.
