Not sure where to post this question...
Does anyone know if chicken manure presents a danger (as far as infectious disease) to a pregnant woman? I am expecting and caring for all of my animals. I know that the cat litter is off limits but I am not sure about the chicken poop. I will ask my doctor next week but I didn't even think of it until my husband asked if the new chicks (coming in April) will be on his chore list as well.

Pretty sure it's not, just make sure you wash your hands after you handle the chickens. They don't carry toxoplasmosis or whatever it is that cats have. However, after dragging my but every morning to take care of my chickens, even the day I delivered I wouldn't blame you if you added the chickens to hubbys chore list.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

to be honest, my doctor said one of the best things I could have done for myself when I was pregnant with my daughter was to have kept getting up, going out and tending my chickens, twice a day, every day, rain or shine, simply because it gave me 15 or 20 mins of fresh air and sunlight and some nice mild exercise and to tell the truth they really were the only reason I got up in the morning.

Granted I only had 2 chickens at the time so I wasn't hauling large amounts of food or water.

My doctors only warning to me was that I should be closed into my grandfather's much larger coop for more than 15minutes a week because, with little to no ventilation and nearly 300birds the amonia in his coops can be toxic to a non pregnant person, so it was down right dangerous to me...

in conclusion, according to my doctor it just depends on how many chickens you have and how good a ventalation system.

Yeah, you don't want to be breathing a lot of crap even when your're not pregnant. Healthy, cared for chickens are fine. I cared for mine while I was pg both times and my boys are fine. Well, mostly, the older one is a little weird...........

Mother of 5 here and tended huge amounts of poultry & waterfowl, hogs, cattle, horses, sheep & goats from start to finish.Never had any trouble asides from not being able to see my feet...once you get to that point, be sure your path is clear before you set out doing things. I was carrying a box of chicks out to the chick building 8 1/2 months PG with child # 4...fell put my arm out front to stop from landing on my belly...dislocated my elbow and fractured my elbow in 2 places, left arm ( I am a lefty also!) That was horrible. But kept at it and still at it.
