well, yeah, 2020 was flu free. But 2019 wasn't. It's always going to come along, every few years, maybe more often. Hopefully this one will fizzle out quickly.

Good luck to you and prayers for everyone. Please keep us posted! Hope it misses you. I know how you feel; if it ends up devastating our flock, I would be seriously emotionally traumatized. Our birds are part of our family; they all have names and their own personalities. it would be beyond terrible. And thanks for sharing what's going on in your State.I'm in Delaware, 3 counties in this state. The flock affected, so far, is in the northern county, New Castle. I'm about 90 miles south of there. It was also found in a flock in Maryland on Delmarva, about 60 miles northwest of me. When it is found in 1 bird, the entire flock is then destroyed & that place quarantined, in an effort to stop it from spreading.
It is worrisome because they say that migratory birds can carry it far & wide. With the wild Canadian & Snow geese now migrating northward, as they travel, pooping as they fly & pooping when they land gleaning farm fields along the way, that's how avian virus spreads & is transmitted to various places & other flocks, wild & domestic, as they fly over.
They say a quick blurb on local news, a few sentences, ending with "It's not transmitted to people". As a small backyard flock owner, considering my egg layers & sweet Roos part of my family, I am concerned. All we can do is the best we can, with biosecurity preventative measures & hope this doesn't get bad. They've already canceled our state yearly spring poultry show & we were really looking forward to it as the last show was 2019 thanks to covid. I hope we all get through this & there are minimal casualties. Good luck everyone.![]()

I normally love ducks and geese! I hate that recently I have been chasing them off my property instead of watching them! Bird flu in my neighboring county (I'm in Northern Illinois).. really hoping nothing gets too bad here.I’m in Kentucky; it’s bad here!
It’s in Six confirmed counties. Two of which are next to us, one below and the other is on the west-side of us. — In the county below us, it hit a commercial chicken farm; 240,000 birds were culled. I can’t remember what the Cull Zone was for that outbreak or what a normal cull zone perimeter would be around a confirmed case. But, it would definitely devastate us if one came into our place.
I did hear that if your Npip certified, you get full reimbursement per bird according to their calculations, (whatever that is!) and if your not, you get 25% per bird. Now that, I really have NO idea how much they consider a chicken is worth monetary-wise…but, that sure isn’t the point for us Backyard owners; Is it?!! - Ugh… it’s just so stressful
So yeah, I’m considering our county positive as well. We see geese flying over ALL the time in their beautiful little “V’s” and honking their “honks”. — Bless them!! Poor things!!! I hate that I cringe when they fly over now instead of enjoying the sight of them…

I hope everyone is safe, healthy and happy out there!!!![]()
Amen! Life is just crazy anymore. There is so much overall turmoil & chaos...still reeling from cancer in my whole family 2000 to 2007, family member deaths 2006 to 2008, economic devastation 2008, cancer again, divorce, career loss & more family member & friends deaths, then a global pandemic with another career loss, stupid politicians, rising costs of basic food, medicines & gas, now we add juggling avian flu & possibly WWIII?
Yeah, can we pile any more on???
I'm thinking that we ALL appreciate our flocks so much, not just for eggs to eat, but for their ability to make us smile, their funny antics, their joy of discovering a mere worm or getting one little treat...their simplicity keeping us grounded, their companionship, their comforting clucking sounds, the goodnight song that sounds like letting the air out of a balloon, their happy good morning crows...
I just want to say thank you. With so much negativity, I am so very grateful to have chickens sharing my life, and you all here on this site to talk to about it!![]()
