Preparing for winter.

Well, I have pretty sandy soil too, but I don't want to dig up my yard to get it.
It really does get my DH though when he goes to buy sand of all things, for quail to play in. Good thing he likes Quail cooked in Chili Verde.

But I'm serious. I remember when the kids came home from school in February with snow on the ground, the ground frozen solid. They needed dirt to plant some seeds in. Potting soil wouldn't do, it had to be plain old garden dirt. So we were out there shoveling off a spot and using a pick axe to get at 2 cups of dirt. Now this was going on all over the town. I am sure the teachers were standing at their windows, laughing their hats off. This really happened, honest.

And ya, I have run out of sand in the north for the chickies dust area in the hen house. Cause we used it for ice on the driveway and weights in the back of the car and the truck, then used when someone ran off the road into the ditch and got stuck.

So guys, set some sand aside just for the little quailies, you can always use it on the ice or if ya get stuck in the snow.
And don;t fprget, you keep that snow up north. We don't want to see it down here. Well, the ones that know what it is anyway.

OMG I didn't even think of sand in winter.

Makes me start wondering what else I'm forgetting. I guess I'll remember when the ground frozen and there is a couple feet of snow on the ground.

Hmmm.. Good excuse to buy some more hatching eggs before it gets too cold!

The stuff you put in a nice cup of water on a warm summer day, or down south you put it in some sweet tea.

Ice is like rain, but it is hard and cold.

A lot less of it in Colorado than there was in Wisconsin (where I am originally from).

My winter prep includes lots of straw. My quail are on the ground in a converted dog kennel. Their pen has wind breaks along the walls as well. But they love fresh straw. They burrow under it in the summer to keep cool too. So their hutch inside the pen got more fresh straw and they got a new layer in the main pen. That should keep them happy.

This will be their first winter outside. Last winter I had to keep them inside because the woman I bought them from had been raising them in her basement. I enjoyed their singing but UGGHHH! They are messy. I am so happy they will be outside this time.
