Preparing to set call and pekin duck eggs! Hatch day should be March 4, 2021 if all goes well!

My big ducks are probably wondering what in the world is going on. They're such good quackers so I'm sure they're patiently waiting on me to walk them down to their duck house and go fish some minnows out of the pond for them. Thankfully they're safe but I better go take care of them.

@Overo Mare has your duckling fluffed up yet?
Aww. What breeds of big ducks do you have? :)

I bet they’ll be jealous of tiny cute call ducklings! :p

I just did it slowly and I see the membrane going in and out so I'm guessing it's beak is under the external pip. I'll check it in a few minutes.
I would say so. If it externally pipped there and you can see the membrane moving then I bet that’s definitely where the bill is. :D

I had one malposition that I didn’t see a bruise on... I could hear peeping but I couldn’t figure out where. So I made a hole over the air cell but couldn’t see the bill. Came back a few hours later, picked up the little fella and felt something on the under side of the egg with my finger. I carefully turned it over and saw that it had externally pipped in the small end facing down... no wonder I heard peeping! Imagine my shock when I saw that and wondered how I didn’t notice that for a few hours! :lau
Here’s the pip/hole and then a picture of the duckling now. This one is about 2 weeks old now.
It’s the little black bibbed in the middle. :D

Pekins, Buff Orpington and a Cayuga. They're pretty special. I've posted on many occasions about my Pekin Duck, Honey Boo Boo. We battled bumblefoot off and on for 8 months. I ended up taking her to an avian vet that wasn't close by at all. They told me that my only option was to euthanize her and wanted to do it right then. I refused and they said that they'd give me pain meds for a few days because I'd be back to have her put down in a few days at most. That was on October 22nd. I'm about to carry her down to her duck house in just a moment. I adjusted the dosage of antibiotics and the daily care routine. She hasn't been on any meds since late Nov. I do keep her foot bandaged at all times because she suffered from some bone erosion to a digit from the infection which causes a very slight limp. With her being a large breed she's prone to getting a slight abrasion with normal wear but with a limp, it's more of a risk. The bandaging is a precaution that's proven to be worthwhile. I'm certainly not bad mouthing the vet. I understand that she was in the mindset that this is a $5 duck/livestock and didn't want to put her butt on the line trying to treat her. My animals are pets. They're cared about and for and deeply loved.

I have pekins as well. The Buff and Cayuga are darling as well. That is so sweet that you refused to give up on Honey Boo Boo. What a blessing that she is doing well despite the vet’s prognosis. I’m so glad she is doing better. She is so lucky to have such a caring and wonderful owner! It sounds like you provide them with the best care possible and love them dearly! ❤️ :love
I feel the same way about my pets (especially the ducks) but most people don’t understand.

They don't know what they're missing do they? They'd be puzzled as to my joy in digging up earthworms with my ducks this afternoon! They don't get excited over much so to see them get all excited is the BEST!!! We're lucky aren't we? Thanks to you amazing folks, I hope to add some absolutely adorable ducklings (that hopefully talk all day long)! I'd be lost without this thread so thank you so much to all of you!

They sure don’t! My ducks always try to muzzle me after rooting through the mud for tasty earthworms! :p
We sure are lucky, and there’s never a dull moment!
I’m rooting for all your little call ducklings! Hopefully they all escape their shells safely. They’ll be so adorable! :fl

I’m so glad this thread has been able to help you out! I received such great help from others on here when I was hatching my call ducklings! :D

I don’t think so. Looks fine from what I’m seeing. Shaw, what do you think?
I thought all the same stuff you thought so I didn't say anything. 😂
Not sure what happened to my last post so I'll try again. My apologies if it shows up twice. Whenever they're shrink wrapped, do you just keep watching for them to stop chewing and yawning and then open the air cell then slowly chip away shell and lubricate it? #1 was my first pip internally and externally. It's trying to chip away at the shell but maybe once a minute, I'll see it chew for a second then back to talking. I believe they're all shrink wrapped unfortunately. Poor babies. This is disappointing and I'm sure extremely frustrating for them.
Again I agree with WV. That does not look shrink wrapped to me I think they are fine.
The only other thing you can really do if you are worried and wanna see what's going on, is take all the air cell shell off, up to the point where it meets the rest of the egg. Then you can lubricate all that membrane and watch the veins better and see where it's Bill is. But it may not even be in trouble yet. It may still turn and pip in another spot.
