Surviving The City- A Stray Dog Story
By Hannah Wallace
~Prologue~
In a crowded city in Connecticut, in a beautiful park, Newberry Park, a female dog gives birth to her pups. Her mate stands nearby, calm, serene, clearly powerful, almost as if he has others working for him. He is the Alpha of his pack, the powerful, amazing Golden Pack, a pack that houses dogs that have only the purest of heart, hearts of gold.
The mother dog, Sarladosa, has finished birthing her pups. They lay pressed against her belly, little squirming bundles. They are unaware of the life ahead of them, and two in particular, will have many a challenge to face in their lives.
*****
The months have passed. That warm day in spring, when the mother dog gave birth to her pups seems far away; now the survivors of her litter of pups are young adults, juveniles. They seek their own life, and make their own paths; they no longer rely on their parents for food; instead, they hunt for their own food. The father, Jay, is old, and he knows his death is nearing. He must find the heir to his pack! It was now time for him to choose one of his packmates' pups to be the new Alpha.
He called the pack meeting later that night. Under the full moon, he had all the eligible, stable, young males from that spring lined up. He looked at them all, his eye sharp, and trained to find the perfect pup. He could only see his own son, Del Endigo, perfect. Certain that something was wrong with him, he called upon the elder of his pack, Pace, for help.
Pace looked at all the young males, and, while they were quite eligible, he, too, agreed that Del Endigo was the rightful heir to the place of Alpha in Golden Pack.
The announcement was made, that Del Endigo was to be the Alpha. All of Golden Pack agreed when Pace told them so, for he was the wisest, and therefore whatever he said was pure.
Now, this news shocked Del Endigo's brother, Jargo, who had practiced his Alpha Behaviors, whereas Del Endigo never had. Jargo was emotionally crushed. All he had wanted was to be Alpha, and finally prove himself to his father, who had, from the day Jargo was born, thought he was a screw-up.
In his anger, Jargo declared the entire pack to be nothing but lunatics, and he turned in anger to leave. Right before he left, he snarled over his shoulder, in bitter anger, “I will kill you, Endigo! One day, I will kill you, and take your place as Alpha of Golden Pack! Just you wait and see!”
Then, he left. He wasn't seen again, but there were rumors: he was rallying all of the dirtiest, sneakiest of dogs, and getting them to join his pack, the pack he called Negro Pack. Of course, Endigo believed that these were nothing more that rumors. His brother wanted Golden Pack, not just any pack.
The horror of their son's betrayal and promise shocked Jay and Sarladosa so badly that they mourned him, then, Sarladosa died of grief. This was not how she wanted Jargo to turn out. Eventually, the loss of Sarladosa took it's toll on Jay, and he wasted away beside her grave.
But, one day, Del Endigo's ignorance was shattered. His brother met him while Golden Pack was hunting. Claiming that Golden Pack was on his territory, he attacked his brother. Endigo was horrified, and shocked: hos brother had all intentions of killing him, like he had said!
From then on, Negro Pack and Golden Pack were separated by a border of hate and mistrust. Neither pack would interact with each other; they were frequently locked in furious battles: no treaty could be made, nothing could quench Jargo's thirst; nothing except the spilled blood of his brother, and the position of Alpha of Golden Pack. And so, the eternal war between the two packs was born.
