Price for registered Nubian (PICTURE!)

I was wondering that too. I think like all breeds can be purebred or american, but whats the difference???

Americans are what you get through registered grades. You have a recorded grade doe, breed her to a purebred buck (a buck with full ADGA standing, whos lineage can be traced all the way back)...you get a 50% American offspring. Breed your 50% doe to another PB buck...their offspring are 75% and so on. Once you get 3 gens in, the DOE kids are 100% American. I think the 4th generation in, buck kids are registerable as American (up to that point they are NOT registerable).

So, Americans come from unknown backgrounds, basically...and aren't as valuble as PBs.

I am so glad that you said this just one more ? how do you get a recorded grade. I bought a reg buck and want to use him on my unreg does only one doe is good enough that I would like to try to reg kids from them I am unsure how to preceed.

All of the info is on the ADGA website. They just have to meet the breed standard for that breed. AFAIK the only breed that is not eligible is the Nigi.

I disagree. This is a very broad statement and depends on what you consider "valuable". Check out this site:

Many of her goats are Americans and have still earned their SGCH designation.

And, once an American, always an American, which means that if you breed an American to a PB, you will get Americans, regardless of how many generations you keep breeding to PB.

And remember folks, the "original" PB's in the herdbook didn't have all their lineage recorded-they only had to "look" Nubian too...

When you send in the registration papers, you will fill in the information on the sire side. On the dam side you will put "unregistered". Those kids (doe kids only) will be 50% recorded grades, provided they meet the breed standard.

Ksacres - I OWN a 50% American...I'm not downplaying their value as a dairy goat in general...but for show and breeding...NO, they're clearly not as valuable.

OH MY GOSH! I want one! Soooooo cute!

Go get her right now... You will love her and her babies. I love the ears. As for the price, I looked at Nubians and was considering a Pure Bred proven show Doe (4 yrs old) for $500. And she was open (not bred).

OMG, I am having a goat induced stress attack. I talked to the guy, he had said initially he'd need at least $350 for her - now it's $400 firm. It's not that much of a price bump, but GEEZE I was already a stressed because I'm a first timer and felt like I was spending a lot. I have my little extra money stash to pay for these projects, and she will completely break the bank.

GAH.

The other option I have is an '08 sable doeling, registerable but not registered, not bred - $135. She's a big tall doeling and also really nice... The owner planned to breed her and another doeling in the next month or so to try for a Fall kid. However, I would not likely get her bred until Fall, so I'd just be feeding her for the next year.

So would it be better for me as a newbie to just have one milker this season?

I am just torn up about what to do, trying to make decisions without having experience to back them up is stressful!
