Price of feedin your area

I first started raising chickens as a kid in 1977. I remember paying 3.17 for 50# of carnation layer pellets. I raised my feed money from selling night crawlers for .50 cents a dozen. I now pay 7.80 for 50# of crumbles. Boy I wish it was still that cheap. My flock still pays for itself but it is getting real close.

wow looks like i've got some of the cheapest feed.
Although i have to drive for a while to get it = )
its 15.50 for 100lbs of hen scratch.
and 17.25 for 100lbs of laying pellets.
= )
gotta love it.
(whats better is i get around 7 bucks a doz for my eggs

$10.25? The chick starter I'm still using is $15.99 here, haven't bought the layer stuff yet, but I'm sure it's as high! I couldn't tell you what eggs in the supermarket are around here, I don't buy them, but I'll bet they're over $2.00 even at Wal-Mart. Local farms sell eggs for between $2.50 and $4.00. Tell your husband to consider himself lucky!!

I pay $15.75 for 50# of Kent Chick Go and $14.50 for Kent Layer. There is still a sign up at the elevator for $1.50 for a doz brown eggs. I don't know how that person can do it. Surley they aren't making any money. I don't know what cracked corn is going for now but last I looked it was over $10 for 50#.
Guess I have resigned to the fact that my chickens are an expensive hobby.

Our laying crumbles here at TSC is $13.99 for a 50 lb. bag. The local feed store is about $11.99 a bag. I haven't checked at the local co op yet.

Littlecimm,

$7 a dozen?!!

Are chickens rare in your area?
I'll probably get no more than $2 around here.

50 lbs of Oyster Shell $11.00

50 lbs of Purina Start and Grow $12.99

50 lbs of Cracked Corn $9.89

50 lbs of Purina Flock Raiser $14.00

#50 is 10.55 at my local co-op.
#50 of cracked corn is 9.50.

Our has went up over the last months too. It was about two dollars less.

I don't know if you allow your girls to free range or not but I have noticed since I have started my feed cost have gone down. I have 11 pullets and they go through a #50 bad of crumbles in about a week and a half now. It was about a week.

Good luck with your husband.

Mine will spend $20 on a #20 bag of dog food but complains about my chickens costing him. Not to mention the vet bills and heart worm meds. Go figure!

Wow, my 24 hens, two roosters and one duck go through a 50# bag of flock raiser pellets in two weeks. Have you tried switching them over to pellets? There is so much less waste. I also throw a lot leftover to them. They also free range from three in the afternoon to dark.
