prices for 6 wk old chicks

Also please screen the people who are buying them..
If some 14 year old kid shows up or some mom wanting to get 3 year old Jessica a playroom pal you should turn them away. Just use good judgement, even though at $3 a life they are still an animal and hopefully go to someone that will be good chicken owners.

The posts above are from poultry people.. The majority out there looking are likely beginners and will not even know what a poultry swap is.

I'd say start at $30 and haggle down to $20. Why? Because you got plenty of time before having too many roosters becomes a problem.. Then again you mentioned you're limited to 12.

If it were me I just would not take $10, not just because of the work you've put into them but also at $10 you'll have just about any moron out there buying them. $20-30.. well usually a wacko looking to torture an animal or impulse purchase a new "pet" won't spend that much. Consider it a rehoming fee.

I would not sell the silkies for less, personally I'd advertise them as pets, sell them in pairs for $60 a pair. That's just me but it's all in how you advertise something and not so much the product itself.(Think Shamwow)
Not all of us are wackos. How many do you know? And why do you know them?

Unless you're someone who enjoys torturing animals then I did not call you a wacko.

Sadly having been a reptile/amphibian owner and collector for years I can tell you I've seen quite a few rescued animals.. Animals people rehomed on craigslist only to seen legs broken, cig burn marks on them, limbs chopped off.. Same reason POS lowlifes purposefully swerve to hit ducks or turtles in the road.. The same kind of people who thought a puppy was a great idea and 5 months later dumping it behind mcdonalds and driving off. World is full of some sick evil people and well when giving away animals or selling them I think its our duty to make sure they get to good homes.

This is why I prefer to sell rare breeds rather than barnyard mixes or common breeds. I can justify charging more to turn a better profit, and no one is going to spend $30 on one of my birds just to torture it for fun when free roosters are as common as table salt. It's a win-win.

I bought chickens from a lady on craigslist. Does that make me a moron or a wacko. You've made generalizations about chicken owners. As I am an owner I consider your words directed at me and most of the other owners out there. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean all owners or would be owners are the same.

I agree with rehoming them to a good home... When I had to thin out my flock, I found a farm that had 33 acres that would take them. I wasn't going to just let anyone show up at my house and buy my chickens. I don't do well with strangers coming on to my property just because of all the horror stories I've heard.

I think poultry swaps are the first place beginners look, at least that's where I went for my first flock. Where I live they advertise chicken swaps pretty well and TSC puts out big signs for the swaps because they enjoy the crowd... It benefits TSC because people will buy chicks/chickens and then they go inside their store and buy all the supplies.

So if I said "Don't let your kids take candy from strangers in vans."
Would you reply saying some strangers in vans are good people for children to interact with?

I'm simply advising caution, I'm not saying every chicken buyer out there is Jeffrey Dahmer reincarnated looking for his next snack. But when giving away or selling a living creature it is worth a few moments of caution and vigilance in checking over any potential buyers.

Again not sure why you're getting offended because you're clearly not who I'm talking about.

I think sometimes messages are read differently and that is the problem with social media and text messaging... The way you intended for the message to be delivered, many times is not the way that the person receives it.

Let's get back to helping this person out... I think that everyone has concluded that they should look into who is buying their chickens and that selling them for cheaper will bring in some unwanted chicken owners and a higher price would make sure that these unwanted chicken owners do not get a hold of their chickens...

Rich people love sales. I don't think price has anything to do with it. You are discriminating against poor people. Poor people can be good chicken owners too. You should have stuck to helping instead of catorigizing.

Personally I feel like if somebody is too poor to pay a decent price for a chicken up front, I don't want to sell it to them because it is more likely they will also end up skimping on feed, vet care, etc... and that is not fair to the animals. If people are poor I think they should focus on bettering their personal situations without dragging more financial dependents into the mix, be they children, livestock, or pets.
