Prices for Chickens...

my customers were paying 6 dollars a hen at the feed store when we ran into each other, I explained that I could produce a superior product but it would be twice the $...............They agreed and here we are!!

That's exactly what I'm selling mine for, and it sounds like you're doing them similar to me. I'd suggest $10. It's enough that you still come out ahead when you factor in the birds you want to keep, but cheap enough that people aren't freaked out compared to the $5 bird they can get at Meijer.

My local grocery chain has whole 3 lb chickens (cooked and served hot) for $4.00......... Giant Eagle...........

Crazy how cheap they can do it. After you raise some yourself and know the cost... it seems a little scary to be honest.

I pay 10.00 ea. for 6 to 8 lb dressed cornish cross and i know it cost 2.50 to butcher. I think it's cheap here in Minnesota.

That is what is great about the heavy rangers. You feed them for a month turn them loose if you have acreage and harvest. Cost is about $1 per bird plus maybe $1 feed to get them started. 4# for $2, not bad, though they will not taste like the supermarket bird, but then if ya want a bird to taste like the market birds, buy a market bird.

People who like dual purpose have it even better. Just let nature take it's course and all you have to do is harvest.

Cheap meat comes at a cost. Usually the well being of the animals and the processors!

I've just started occasionally eating meat again after 10 years off. I paid $20 for a large pasture raised organic chicken. I now know the farmer, trust her methods, and appreciate her work. That's worth the money for me.

Granted, city prices are always higher, but if you can turn it into an experience and educate your customer at the same time, then you deserve the money!

I am in TX I sell mine for $10. each. I get about 25 processed and sell 15. I'm not making a fortune but it works. It pays for my processing and the birds with a little left over. Same for eggs, I sell them for $2. a dz. and they are good breeds and free range. But I just enjoy the birds.

I'm getting $3 a pound, no questions asked.

Same here. We butcher CX at 3 1/2 - 5 lbs, making the price range from $10.50 - 15.00 per bird. Customers are happy to pay it. We also get a lot of repeat business.
