Pricing Chicks

Hello. I ended up with a few extra chicks...salmon favorelles, cuckoo Maran, and cream Legbar...I posted locally in hopes someone would want them and I was shocked at the response. Now I figure maybe I’ll sell off this lot and hatch another one for myself. How do I go about pricing them?? Local stores like Agway and TSC are roughly $5 each...do I stick with that? Would I get more if I raised them myself for a few weeks or months? (That was my kids idea...they want to keep all 24 of them )

It all depends on breed and wether or not you can sex. I know in my experiences I would way rather get baby chicks when they are a few days old to get them friendly with me. Some people do prefer a couple months old though because that means less time they have to wait for eggs. Anyway as for pricing, straight run tends to go for a lot cheaper so you have to consider that. Also for breed I would be willing to pay 10 for something like a salmon faverolles but would probably only end up wanting two. To were as I probably wouldn’t want to pay more than 5 for a broiler chick. I think the main thing though is if you can be more flexible than local places. Such as with minimum because a couple of places by me have a minimum of atleast 3 or 4 and it’s very discouraging

It also depends on the quality of your birds. Are you hatching from catchery stock (nothing wrong with that) or private breeding line? If they are being bread and hatched from your own breeding program you can state this in your advertising and maybe get a little more.

Thank you for the info! Long story to how we got to having so many extra, but there was a change in the delivery I guess and I ended up with 4 blue laced (I assume Wyandotte’s) and 4 cuckoo Marans. I really had my heart set on the Salmon Favorelles...maybe next year.

Personally, I think this is a question of supply and demand in your local area. These are not normal times. Young sexed birds are in great demand and most people will pay extra for home bred birds. Especially if you are friendly and can offer advice. Breed doesn't matter to the new Corona buyers. They just want something that will lay eggs. I would wait until you can sex them. You'll get a premium. Don't undersell. You can always lower the price or do a deal on 3 or more. I sold a few extras this week too and after the response I got I wish I'd had a barn full.
