Pricing eggs for sale from home

Out in CA I sell mine for $3 per dozen or $4.50 per 18 count. Most folks want the 18 count and they usually give me a 5 and say keep the change. I have a list so long, I am very anxious for my 25 chicks to start laying. I only have 11 laying hens now (avg.9 eggs a day) and they can't come close to filling the demand.

I am going to make a sign next weekend and put it out and see if I can attract any local business. I won't have enough to sell daily. I am off 2 days per week, and will hang out my sign on those days. If I get a decent response, I will get more chicks for future egg sales.

I give away eggs to family. I also contacted a friend of mine who is a pastor's wife, and asked her if there is anyone in their congregation who is in need. She gave me the name of a lady that I am already acquainted with who is on a a fixed income, and very tight budget. I called her, and will be giving her some eggs. She is very proud though, and offered to pay me. I told her that this is a way I can be blessed, and she could take any extra money she has and bless someone else in some way. Also, I told her I would be planting a big garden this spring, and she can look forward to some fresh produce.

I don't have a lot of money, usually things are tight here-but I have it so much better than A LOT of folks. Have a blessed day.

Why don't you contact her to see if you could somehow work together for your mutual benefit? At the very least I would be curious to see her set-up, to learn how she could afford to sell for such a low price. Perhaps you each have a different type of product, maybe hers are caged & yours free-ranged, so you could each satisfy different types of customers.

Otherwise, buy up all her eggs at $1.50 and re-sell them for $3!! (Just kidding there...)

I'm in line with visiting the craigslist seller, too, but for different reasons.

GO buy a dozen of those $1.50 eggs find out what sort of conditions they are produced under. Smile and be friendly and get them to tell you all about their operation. See what is the reason for the low price. Chances are good there's something low grade going on in order to offer eggs for $1.50/dozen. Then decide to compete on those grounds.

Can I offer a few thoughts off the top of my head? Then I'll get my coat.

- First, I'd steer clear of craigslist. The folks who buy $1.50 eggs off of the "rag sheet" will often beat you up for that same $1.50 and aren't liable to be very loyal. So don't attract them.
You are interested in a "select clientele," so to speak, ones who look for value.
(Think about it - with all the cars to buy, SOMEONE chooses Lexus and Cadillac. These are the people you want.)

- It seems like a good idea to put a little into the packaging of your package, too, so it is attractive and distinctly yours. Make it look like its worth your price.

- Work to create a loyal following of consumers. Without bashing this other seller, let these loyalists know why your difference is better for them.

- Look at this as selling in a niche market. Decide who your best customers would be... then go after them with good promo materials.

In short, I guess I'm recommending you respect what you have as valued - and those of the same mind will come round in time to do the same. There is always someone to buy off the dollar rack - and someone to sell to them. But are these really the customers you want, or the seller you want to be?

I'll get my coat, now...
Good Luck.

I think we should all figure out what it costs to MAKE the eggs, then add alittle profit for ourslves, and charge a fair price. When customers say....why do you charge $X, you say that is what it costs to produce them....

Damerow says it takes about 4 pounds of feed to make a dozen eggs, so start by figuring feed cost. My feed is about $13 for 50 pounds, which is 25 cents per pound, so my feed cost is $1 per dozen!!!

I AM NOT selling eggs for $1.50!!

HoosierHen,
I am in central IN too so I know what you mean about egg prices. We are way far from having eggs and I won't have enough to sell once I give to family, but if we had any left to sell it would be at least $2.00 a doz. Good luck.

First of all here was my ad:

Farm Fresh Free Range Eggs for sale.

Wholesome, healthy, delecious from from a happy free ranging flock.

She copied my ad word for word exactly!!! When I went back to check to see if my ad had been posted there was another underneath it so I am thinking for some reason it got put down twice. BUT then I saw the price and realized it was not my ad at all and someone that was undermining me. With the price of feed, the work involved, I really want to get $3.00 a dozen and I think that is a fair amount because the free range eggs in the supermarket are over that. I am not a commercial business here, I just have a nice healthy flock of chickens and would like to get back a little of the feed money is all and give people the chance to buy some REAL eggs. The eggs are really nice too, very heavy and good!
I will not back down from the $2.50 and I will NOT sell the for $1.50, I will feed them back to the chickens first.
I never thought to go to her/his place and buy some eggs and see what the set-up is. Maybe I will do just that. I have a feeling it is someone that is over chickened trying to get customers and then will jack up the price. Either way I do not like the idea of how she copied my ad word for word exactly, I find that to be not a very nice thing to do and that's why:

Why don't you get a friend to anonymously go there for those $1.50 eggs and innocently ask "Gee, I was going to buy eggs from another seller but then I saw your ad offering a lower price! What's the difference between yours & theirs? Your ads said the EXACT SAME thing but yours are cheaper. Are yours as good for a lower price?" Perhaps this way you can get the real story before it gets confrontational. Perhaps there really is an innocent explanation for all this.

Or perhaps this person is really just a jerk. But a friend could go first & learn more information as an anonymous customer than you could as another seller of eggs.

If you were in my neighborhood I'd go to that seller and help you out, I think it would be fun. Hope you get things resolved soon!
