Probably the dumbest canning question EVER!

Yeah, my grandmother used to can green beans all the time and they were soooooo yummy!!! I plan to try some soon. I like the fact that this one isn't too big to fit on the stove comfortably and I don't plan on putting away enough at one time to need bigger than this anyway. It does seem kinda thin....I am just hoping they HAVE to make them strong enough to withstand the pressure!!!

An old one would be really cool!!! I would love to have my grandmother's, but I have no clue what happened to it.

I know this will sound dumb to anyone who is used to canning, but am I supposed to be able to smell whatever I am canning or did I do something wrong?

Congrads on your 1st canning! I actually look forward to canning season, love all the smells. My Favorite to have canned is meat. (Chicken or Venison usually) The whole house smells like having a roast slow cooking in the Crock pot!..very easy to do & makes a great FAST meal.

I gotta get a pressure canner for myself this year too, so I'll be on the same learning curve.

Terrie if you can get the outdoor type of single burner, on propane. Works great and will not heat up your house. Our new BBQ has one on the side and in the summer I do the pasta noodles out there even. Your right the ceramic tops are just no good for boiling anything.

I also have a smooth top stove, and was warned not to put a pressure cooker or cast iron pan on it...sigh. But I have the old 'hotplate' single burner thing for the counter that I will use. Of course, I have to get the cooker first! lol......

I agree with the propane burner. Also with the electric eye if you have one.

We have a huge grill and the burner using propane is awesome! It intimidated me at first because of the regulation of the heat and steam escape.

The electric eye works really well too.

For canning, I bought a 2 burner cast iron camp stove. The kind with the legs. They are pretty cheap at places like Sportsmans Warehouse. My DH thought I was stupid for insisting I get one, but he'd never canned or been around people who canned ever. I've always canned and been around marathon canners and I knew what I wanted. Now, after just a few times, he thinks I'm a genius for getting that stove.

Okay, I just read something that stopped me in my tracks to getting a pressure cooker.

I was planning on geting one this past weekend but had too much company to go shopping, so it will be this coming Friday. I have canned tomatoes and such using the hot water bath 2 years ago, put up 15 jars of pickles this weekend and 10 jars of pickled okra. Want so badly to put up some green beans and other stuff. What's the deal with using a pressure cooker on the flat top stove? Will they not heat up right, blow up?, or what? I want one but if I can't use it on my stovetop, I don't have any other place to use it. Stop me before I spend that money, if it's not going to work for me!!!!

MyDD has a flat top stove and all she uses is iron ware, esp her iron frying pans,I asked her if she was supposed to use them on the flat top since it looks like glass, and she said as long as she was careful she could use the iron, this was over 2 years ago and hers is still looking great.
