PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

No, I never strain my Kombucha tea. I simply pour off the mother and a bit of tea into a quart mason jar and then reintroduce it to new tea the same day. It takes a week to brew the tea, but the mushroom takes much longer to grow.

Sometimes, I strain my tea. I will decant it after a week, but not drink it right away.,,Sometimes the decanted tea will grow what i call a "jelly fish". Not a full mother( though it would be ,if I left it alone). I do not like to drink it and get a "jelly fish" in my mouth. The loose colonies are fine, but not the solids. Drinking it is OK, I just don't like the feeling in my mouth!

What ARE you doing Ernie to get so many babies? I have the same slow growing grain since Thanksgiving( I have split it though....I think I eat the babies when they are small.....) Maybe mine is just old........

I think what I am doing is adding more grain per milk ratio! When I started them I never split them till there was almost a full cup of grains in a quart of milk! Are you using Whole milk! I think also they really love the High Milk fat content of the milk that I am using!!

Here is all I do
Add what ever milk it takes to get to about an inch from the top of a quart jar with grains in it (I probably have about a cup of grains in a quart jar (Just a regular canning jar) stir lightly cover with cloth and rubber band and sit it at the back of the kitchen counter and leave it alone till the next night about 24 or so no set time whenever I get to it!!
Stir lightly strain (Plastic collander that I got from Target) add the grains back to the jar (I don't rinse out between times leaving some thick kefir on the side and bottom) I only use a clean jar every 3rd or 4th time! I keep the surrounding area clean and the cloth clean over the top but I don't rinse the jar that I return the grains to (It also makes a really mellow Kefir too by the way) I don't know if that is the reason or not but I think the leftover media is what make it grow so quick! Whatever it is it seems to work! It has become mellow enough that I drink it warm right after straining!! I have also ate a few of the smaller grains but don't touch the larger ones and am careful not to break up the big ones either!!

I also wanted to add that although many pictures on-line show people handling their scoby, I never touch my scoby with my hands. I don't even let it come out of the tea, not sure if what I'm doing is right, but I think it's really gross to handle it and possibly get it dirty, even if your hands are washed.

I use plastic tongs to handle mine with or put on nitrile surgical gloves cause I didn't know if touching it was bad or not!!!
