I am on my 3 batch of kombucha and gave $23 for 2 cultures and my mushroom on the first started and formed the mushroom in 7 days and I did wait till the eight day to strain since my directions said taste and decide whether to sweet or not at 7 days (I thought it was too sweet so I let it sit another day! I think that maybe the conditions were bad (It takes between 74 and 84 degrees to culture right and ferment) or the culture was bad! Dont give up though cause it is well worth the effort for you and your birds!! Here is a website for both keifer cultures and Kombucha Scobys

I bought my Keifer Grains from her and after 2 weeks they are almost triple in size so I trust the source! I bought Kefir grains frome timeless health and they didn't work and almost gave up till I Found her grains and am now glad I did because it is well worth the effort!! You have to use spring water (No city tap water as it kills the process and first batch should be with green tea and white sugar and You need 1/4 cup of vinegar)

http://www.kefirlady.com/orderkefirgrains.htm With her she ships daily and Live grains and Cultures

Here is where I ordered my first Kombucha from: http://www.kombuchaamerica.com/?gclid=CIHrw8Xzq6UCFUS5KgodJVgGZA

FOLLOW the directions close for the first batch no matter what to get a good return! The health benefits are well worth it!

Just remember when making Kombucha always use spring water (The Chlorine in tap water will kill the culture! Mine suggested to use green tea for the first couple of starts and 1 1/2 cups of sugar and a quarter cup of white or apple cider vinegar (My first one made 2 mushrooms in 7 days! stick a straw in it at 7 days and taste the result if it is too sweet let sit another 24 hours and retest! About 9 to 10 days it should be done! Remember also that it needs to stay at about 76 degrees and not too much above 85 degrees (I made an incubator out of an old cooler an extension cord and a night light) Leave the top off and use a wide mouth jar like Joe shows in the first page of this forum post! Put a paper towel over it and hold it with a rubberband and then i set it in the cooler ~ Put a towel over it to block some of the light ~ hung the night light in the cooler and put the top on I used a turkey thermomemeter and stuck it down the side so I could watch the temp (IT stayed at about 84 degrees around the clock and My house was from 64 to 71 degrees so I guess the night light puts (Regular 4 or 5 watt night light bulb Not Floresent) out more heat than I thought!!!!!

"(The Chlorine in tap water will kill the culture!"

That's not right. When the water is boiled, the chlorine is burned off and evaporates, i.e., you don't have to buy any special water; you can use tap water.

We have well water and it's softened, I took the water from the fridge, where it's filtered and then boiled it... the instructions the culture came with said the first batch would take at least 28 days depending on temperature. They recommended oolong tea so that was what I used. White organic sugar, organic apple cider vinegar. No metal etc. Must have been the temperature of the room so I'll rig up a night light. Thanks for the tips

My directions suggested using spring water and I can get it At walmart for like $2.70 for 2.5 gal jug by Ozarka! Also the directions I had said chloring would kill the culture! Likewise it said not to use distilled water! I am just going by what the directions say! I never drink tap water myself because of all the process that it has to go thru for treatment! I don't like all the extra Chemicals in my body! Just My Preference!!
