Probiotics - To give or not to give?

welcome-byc.gif
I'm glad you joined our "flock!"

I am new to the Forum and to raising chickens myself. I did buy some probiotics today, but I hate to say, I am at a loss as exactly how to give and how much. I have three gold Sex Link and 3 Cochin Bantams about 4 days old. They young man at TSC said that they were giving this to the chicks there already. Do I just sprinkle it on the top of there food (I have it in a dish). I think I would waste it putting it in water, but really sure. The directions mentioned to top dress or in liquid, so I guess I would be okay just sprinkling a small amount of it on the food..... seems like that was what I have already somewhere also. Your help is appreciated. Have enjoyed reading lots of different threads.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I am a huge fan of probiotics and give them to my birds all the time. Nearly everyday. The poultry industry has discovered that there are far less losses in the business if they give their birds probiotics from hatch to the time they go to market. 70% of the entire immune system is in the gut. This is also where dangerous pathogens tend to take hold in the body. These pathogens can't survive in places filled with good bacteria and oxygen. And this is what probiotics do...they add oxygen and all the good bacteria that feed on the bad bacteria. So add them to your birds diet!! Probiotics can keep your birds in tip top shape!
Hi! What kind of probiotics do you use?

Thanks!

Ashley

Quote: I use any probiotic product that contains ONLY probiotics. Don't use any with milk, wheat or soy products. Too much milk and the birds can't digest it. Causes intestinal discomfort. You can use human probiotics or animal probiotics but look at the contents to make sure you are only offering probiotics only. :)

Thanks so much! Super helpful.

Cheers!
