Problem hubby...

Quote:
That is barely the size of a bathtub. Ask your Hubby to go into the bathroom and collect the mysterious eggs from below the soap rack knowing there is a 1X6 box above it and see if he can maneuver without moving the shower curtain. Then tell him that is 5X3 dear. Can we please make it a little bigger!

Slick!!!

I'll second the "build it yourself" motion. Even though John and I built the coop together (and I couldn't have done it without him - there was some heavy lifting involved), there were some aspects of it that I was happier taking care of while he was at work. I know how to use power tools and I had a clear idea of how things should go together, and it was easier on us both for it to just "happen" than to try to negotiate the little details. Not suggesting an end run around hubby, but letting him know that he doesn't have to be responsible for the whole project may go a long way, if he's not really into it.
Good luck!

If you build it yourself, you save money, since you won't have to hire the contractor. Then you can use the saved money on more matierals (spelling wrong), so you can build a bigger coop or even on supplies for your girls. Plus there are plans and ideas on this website, just go to the home page then to coop plans. It should give you some ideas on how to build your perfect coop. Just my 2 cents

yeah, 5x5 would be a pain... Even 4x6 would be easier to build, with a lot less waste. Keep on truckin'!
Appeal to his rational side! Tell him how much waste 5x5 would be and how much easier it would be to build in 4' wide dimensions, like 4x6, 4x8. Then tell him that all 2x lumber comes in 8' pieces (you have to make sure to point out that studs come in 92" pieces to make up for the 2" of a 2x4... So the most reasonable size would really be 4x8, since from a waste less, use more point of view, 4x8 would be the easiest, cheapest and most usefull size for you to build. I know it will work out, you just gotta learn how to speak Martian!

Remember too that after you frame the walls, a 5x5 coop becomes a 4'5" x 4'5" coop. I thought a 4x8 coop would be plenty big enough for the six ladies we have waiting to move in, but after I put the walls up and got inside it, I realized why everyone says to always build it bigger than you think you'll need.
