Problem Quail

I have this tuxedo from my most recent grow outs (I think it is male but it's still not matured). It is getting picked on by my only wild-type male. This morning I watched the wildtype come out of nowhere and rip a bunch of feathers out of its chest and throat. I don't understand, the wildtype gets along with everyone else but when he sees this bird even out the corner of his eye, he goes of his way to chase it down. He doesn't pick on the other males either. How is it that he seems to have it out for one bird? Is this just breeding behavior gone wrong? Will getting rid of the wildtype solve the issue or will another bird start to beat up on the poor thing?

Here's a picture of the tuxedo hiding:

Boys can just be jerks if it were me I would hold the wild one down in dominance everytime you see the bad behavior

Quail don't do well alone. Even as a house pet with a lot of attention, I have a hard time believing that he would be happy.
Good point i keep forgetting coturnix makes need a mini harem most of the time

Alright, well it looks like my grow outs have mostly reached maturity. Unless there are any surprises, the final count is 11 males and 15 females in the aviary. I will be processing the extra males soon.

What is the best practice to breed tuxedos? I have a tuxedo and a pure white male, which will give better patterning? I have solid colored, panda, and tuxedo hens.

If you want more tuxes, I would breed tux to tux and panda, or the white to tux and panda. It depends how tuxy your tuxes are. If your tuxes are very messy, I would cross them to the white to clean them up, and keep the best ones, then repeat until you have the look you want.

I believe most pandas would be Italian and tux, so you would have more speckled looks with the pandas and more solid with the regular tuxes, however, the makeup of colors and patterns varries by breeder, so this might not be accurate in your case .

if you are wondering which males to keep, imo if the options are strictly white or tux, keep 2 whites and a tux. If the tux dies, you can breed up more with the whites, if you have 1 white and it dies, you won’t get another white by breeding the tuxes, (unless you spend MANY) generations selectively breeding, but why reinvent the wheel?

Ok, thank you. I feel more confident about what roosters I will be keeping now. Just went out and weighed all males I think I would like to keep. My tibetan and rosetta roosters weigh a staggering 11.5 ounces (keepers!). The other roosters I am keeping are my roux and silver head-tufted quail. They are both small at around 7 ounces but I'm keeping them due to their colors (and the roux is one of my best-behaved males). The last rooster I am keeping will be the tuxedo, at 7 weeks he is just under 9 ounces so he might be jumbo (or very close) by the time he stops growing.
Finally, because the tuxedo hasn't reached maturity yet and there's still (a small) possibility that it's female, I will keep one more pure white male.

Your roux can make sex links if you cross it to non roux/non silver females, then all red chicks will be girls and all the others are boys. Apologies if I’ve repeated myself.
