Problem w/Oxine

I think WoodlandWoman hit the nail on the head...I do have to work on ventilation. Right now there's only the door that is always open to the run. It rained almost 10" in 2 days here and that's when the mold first appeared. So I don't know if I have a small leak or if the wood just got saturated those days. Haven't had leaking problems since. But I bet ur right, after spraying the diluted oxine there wasn't enough. ventilation so it grew more mold. I haven't lost faith in oxine yet, just was figuring I was doing something wrong, I will have to fix the ventilation situation and try it again.

Ok, it couldn't have been something I did...

...anyway I recently started using oxine and have mixed it in a quart sprayer (2 TBS oxine rest water), and sprayed it to saturate everything inside coop to disinfect and kill some mold that had started in one corner. A day or so later mold had spread down the whole length of one side of the coop! I thought oxine was tough on mold? Am I using it wrong? Do I have to scrub?

Anyone else having this problem? I posted this on a related thread but no one answered.

That isn't real encouraging. Even with moisture problems, One would hope the oxine can hold off mold for more than a day or two. I have a spray bottle mixed up also, for general purpose use around the coop. Not sure of the ounce/tablespoon conversion.....but am using 6 ounces per gallon. I set eggs and used it to clean out the incubator, Would be a bummer if it doesn't kill all the microbes. Mold isn't a problem here in the desert. It does seem to work well on the algae growing in my dogs wading pool.

Are you storing your spray bottle out of heat and direct sun light??​

Using citric acid converts it to a more potent chemical more like bleach. Keep it off your clothes.

If you store it out of direct sunlight, it should be very effective, but in cases where there's something resistant, I mix a stronger solution. For the mold, I'd go 100%...but that's me.

I love the stuff and keep a bottle in my car for my feet, when I've been somewhere others with birds might have been and don't want to track it into my car (for when I don't have my feed store shoes to swap).

I'm paranoid.

If the door to the run is the only ventilation, I'd start cutting ventilation openings. If you can post a couple of pictures of your coop, we could help you with suggestions on the best places to cut openings. That's if you need suggestions. I cover any windows and ventilation openings with 1/2" hardware cloth, attached with wood screws and washers.

You can keep working on killing the mold, but I would still try to get some ventilation openings cut. It will make the air quality in the coop healthier for the chickens.

I use 6 oz. to 1 gallon of water to spray out my coop and roosts. I haven't had mold in my coops though, you might need more ventlation.

I'm using the same ratio of waterxine as 6 oz per gallon water. I just use a quart instead, I did the calculations and it's like 1.5 TBS of oxine per quart of water. Anyway I would love some suggestions on where to put ventilation in my coop, it will be tues til I can get some photos of it since its dark now and I don't get home from work tmrw til after dark.

Cut some holes or long slots up next to the roof and cover them with hardware cloth is what I'd do.

Oxine is a chlorine dioxide solution. Not terribly strong if mixed to the label directions. Adding an acid to lower the water pH (citric acid, vinegar, etc) increases the potency meaning that it has a lot more disinfecting power and also has to be handled more carefully. You can do pretty much the same thing with ordinary laundry bleach.

As others have noted you need to take care of the ventilation because no amount of Oxine or bleach will cure that mold problem for very long until you do.

Here are photos of my coop: where should I add the ventilation? And what type or shape should it be? I have some 1/4" hardware cloth that I was going to cover the openings on the inside and outside.

I'm planning to add a roost if that makes a difference, above the actual chicken door that goes into the run that will run the length of the coop. My coop is not the Taj Mahal but it works!
