I have a cat that is a rescue. We got him when he was a year or less we believe. The cat will not go outside at all. He is not a hunter. Here is my problem. We had him for a year and have grown fond of him. He is clawing up our furniture and carpet. We tried the spray on the cloth products that are supposed to detour him from the areas that he is clawing. It doesn't work. Not to meantion it reeks. As a last ditch effort we need to declaw him. We are concerned for his age. around 2 years old give or take. "My question/concern" is how he will adjust to it. We really do not want to do this but he is destroying our very nice belongings. We have to buy new furniture but can't because of his scratching. He will not use scratching post.

I personally don't like declawing but that is just my opinion. I know its done alot and on various ages.

My cats didnt like the scratching posts either. I think it was because the posts moved (like the ones hung on door knobs) I bought a turbo scratcher and they love that. They also love to use the carpet covered doxie ramp that assists my doxie in getting on the couch. Its a homemade "L" frame with a slanted piece of plywood with a piece of scrap carpet stapled to it. The scratching comes along with their need to stretch.

I know people who have deterred their cat from scratching with a spray bottle. Good luck in breaking your cat of this habit.

Since he will not use scratching posts, declawing is a nec. evil with some cats. I say nec. evil because (as a former vet tech) I saw alot of declawings and I personally find it a painful solution. It is technically the same as removing each one of your own fingertips at the first knuckle. But, while it is a very painful recovery, they do recover fully and do just fine. Maybe someone else has another solution.

Thank You Rooster, I am no fan of declawing either. We tried everything I promise. It is down to the wire. We keep the kitty and never have nice furniture again,LOL or we declaw him then there is the question we can find a new home for him. We do not want that. He likes to lay across the back of our couch and claw away or the base of the stairs and claw on them.

chickensioux, Your avatar is so distracting, is that Johnny Depp? He is one of my favorite actors. LOL I have been looking on google for days now about my kitty problem. Thank You for your response. I am so taunted with this poor cat. We found him on the streets and that is how we met. We can leave him in the garage during certain parts of the year, but summer would be to hot for him and GRRRRRRRRRR. I am lost for words I really do not know what to do. Maybe I will just stare at your avatar. LOL

:weeepkforever: Thank you so much that looks like the answer for us. I am going to Pet co now. Talk to you all later:weee:weee:ya:thumbsup:celebrate:gig:lau

I have a throw on the back of my couch, keeps the cat hair off and stands up to their kneeding and clawing. Keep the nails trimmed helps too.

There are some products that you put on problem areas, like cat away or something like that. nubby plastic pieces.
