Problems, Problems, problems

We don't use the stuff from McMurry's but but for a 3 galllon water we use 1/2 teaspon. our vet who was a chicken inspector some time ago suggested it to us. we use a generic vitamins mineral available in most farm and ranch store and large animal vets.

I also found a paper some place that says that birds that grow faster needs more calcium for there bones but the bird will not process any extra calcium unless there is extra mineral ( its either potasium, mangnisium, or phophorus ) available. This added mineral can be introduced with a water soulable vitamins. I wish I could find that paper again, but it's someplace on the internet.

Well, I got my batch processed yesterday. They were 7 weeks, but I was worried I would lose more to leg probs, so I may have jumped the gun.
But they were also all on the small size. The biggest ones were only 4 lbs or so. They were mostly 3 lb.
So I am convinced it's the feed. I have a 4 week batch too. I've changed their feed so I hope it solves the prob. ALl I know is that the leg probs weren't cuz they were getting big. The big ones were normal. I have been reading Joel Salatins book, and he decribed what was happening with mine...the toes curl up and they "walk" on their hocks. But mine couldn't even do that cuz they tipped over. He said it was protein and some vitamin deficiency. He added riboflavin and a couple others and seemed to fix the problem.
But now my 4 week batch is doing fine, but they still seem so small. What is a 4week broiler supposed to look like?

P.S. Is it too late to give these vitamins?

LAZYGIRL,
Get them on the vitiams now and get and put them on a high protien 22 or 23 % if you can get and they should take off. If they are the meat cross they should weigh around 6 to 8 lbs at 7 weeks. I have 60 some straight run chic on full feed but 18% is all I can get and with this hot weather they started off slow and now they are 8 weeks old and they just started growing good and the rooster will be reaady in another month.

Thanks coondog
I will get some vitamins today. I think we have Flintstones in the cupboard:lol: Just kidding
