Chirping
On Monday I posted about this hen, here is that post. I'm posting a new thread as symptoms have changed.
Brief recap. Chippy, True Whiting Blue, 7 months old was attacked by our dog Oct 13th and has been inside since. She recovered well and we've just been waiting for her to completely regrow her feathers before transitioning her back outside. Nov 12 she ate some of the puppy pads we've been using for bedding & started laying for the first time. Seemed to kick off some crop issues (sour crop) and wetter poop. I had removed food and water around Nov 9th or 10th and was feeding and watering her by hand because she was spilling her water on purpose. She can reach her head through the kennel to eat and drink, but I only saw her eating and so was also offering her wet down food and water regularly. My conclusion after I posted was that I was over 'pampering her' and she was having wet poop because I was giving her too much water.
I was wrong. The wet mushy poop had initially got better when I stopped pushing food/water, but reverted back to mushy and wet yesterday.
Most of Tues & Wed of this week she had her dry food in her kennel filled up and we were able to confirm (by the lowering level) that she was drinking through the kennel just fine. So I kinda took a step back, but was still giving her kefir or yogurt a couple times a day. I noticed on Tuesday that her crop wasn't as full as when I was feeding her the wet feed, but it was a little full in the evening. Wed morning she had no food in her crop but it was soft and squishy so sour crop is still an issue. I noticed yesterday she wasn't eating very much (her crop was empty every time I checked), but she was eating some because there was food on the floor and around supper time I noticed she was a little wobbly on her legs... So I have her some poultry cell (1cc), kefir and some grain mixed together. Then around 8:30 there was definitely something off with one of her legs, she wasn't putting much weight on it and the toes were close together. I gave her egg yolk and a little yogurt then.
This was last night at 8:30pm
Then this morning she's worse. One leg is still worse than the other, but now her good foot is starting to get weak. She also had a very wet watery poop this morning.
My first thought is Vit B deficiency, but I have given her poultry cell a few times (1 cc) in the past week... maybe 4 times total? She's vaccinated against marek's disease. Another thought is these puppy pads (the last bag) have a slight scented smell, while the previous 3 bags of them did not and they are supposed to be unscented and the brand doesn't even sell scented puppy pads.
For breakfast today she got scrambled eggs and about 1.5 cc of poultry cell. I'm planning on doing another 1.5 cc of poultry cell in the afternoon (it suggests 1-3cc per day). I removed her feeder with grain yesterday around 6pm or so because I was moving to scrambled eggs for food for a day or two to see if that helped with the sour crop. I have been giving slippery elm root twice a day since Monday, but yesterday morning was the last time I gave it, I thought it was helping but not sure now.
I had been planning yesterday to get my hubby to pick up Monistat or the store brand of the same active ingredient when he goes to town tomorrow and start treating the sour crop with that.
She's laid four eggs from Nov 13 - Nov 17 and nothing since.
Thanks for any suggestions or thoughts.
