Hi,

We have been getting chicken eggs from a friend and the eggs have been awful. Some of them are all stuck to the inside of the shell when cracking, some feel like the shell is empty, etc. What would cause this? My husband thought maybe the chickens aren't getting enough water. I want to see what I can find out before I say something to them about it.

Thanks

i might agre with your husband, but i have never come across this problem so im not sure! i do recommend that you stop buying from them because this could be caused by unhealthy caged hens.

Stop buying those eggs, they could be from sick hens. It might be due to not enough water, but you would need to see the hens to tell for sure.

I know for a fact that they are not caged. They live in the country and have a large coop with indoor and outdoor runs.

The other thought was that maybe the chickens are getting old?

Thanks for your response. :)

A healthy hen shouldn't lay eggs like that.
If it was just one....but it isn't.
Either the birds are not getting the attention they need, or something is happening after the eggs are laid.
I'd go down and check it out myself.

I've not had an old hen lay a bad egg. They seem to just lay less and less as they age.
Still, going down there would be good as you can see them for yourselves and inquire.
Is your friend selling or giving you these eggs, by the way?

That was my experience when we had chickens too...just laying less.

This year so far they have given me some and I traded zucchini from my garden for some.

Thanks
