Just finished processing my last 6 CX today.....except for some finish work.....got sent packing by a severe thunder storm...no more to process till the fall....unless some roos. I hate the bleeding part....but at least they were quick today....Well, my deed is complete. Finished the 3 I had remaining today.
Largest weighed slightly over 3 lbs finished. (8 wks cornish x)
Not sure I will be jumping at the chance to do this again too soon but am not
against it either. The toughest part was taking the life. (did not get any easier) Some
went more smoothly than others. The cleaning (skinning)
became a non issue for me and went more quickly with
each bird. My husband did decide to help out some.
I am currently making broth. Was still unable to salvage the organs
for cooking. (one step at a time. Also was unable to go the plucking route
first time around). I can't figure out what makes that more challenging for me.
Overall, this was a positive experience and now I have some antibiotic/
hormone free chicken to feed our family. Will wait a few days before
cooking though. Thanks to so many for the support and especially to
Sally for starting this thread. Gave me all the info I needed to complete
the task at hand.![]()
I still have some quills to pick, and some trimming to do...and to make sure all of the lungs, etc are out. I have 40 one-week-old meaties....red rangers and white dual purpose males for capons....so that will be my fall duty.....got a broody with 11 eggs for next weekend.....hubby is going to build me an incubator for my copper marans.....and the American Bresse breeding stock that I am planning to get next week.....the life of a chickaholic....Great job -Not sure I could do 6 as my hands are slightly sore just from doing 3. (I pieced them out after skinning and cleaning them) My husband was my helper (but more like my go-for)
Yeah, we are approaching our triple digit weather so I won't even consider it until the weather cools off. My next experiment is going to be making Sally's home made cooler/bator and see what happens. That won't be for a couple of months though. During this heat, I mostly stay indoors and do some sewing projects and changing things up inside the house. (it's kind of like the east coast winters in reverse)
They look awesome! Are the weights live weight or packaged weight?
Those are the packaged weights. I am letting them rest in the fridge for 2-3 days, then off to the freezer. They look awesome! Are the weights live weight or packaged weight?
Looks like you will have some good roasters for summer bar-b-ques!![]()
Nice!!!Those are the packaged weights. I am letting them rest in the fridge for 2-3 days, then off to the freezer.
Got the rest of my CX processed. They ranged in weight from 5lb 10oz to 6lb 8oz. Now I can concentrate on raising my Red Rangers over the summer. With any luck, no more processing till early September.
