Processing Day Support Group ~ HELP us through the Emotions PLEASE!

Got it done. Three done two more tomorrow. NH red roo is the size of a small Turkey! On left. Saving that for a weekend dinner. Currently making soup with roo #2. The tiny one was cut up and put in freezer to make stock, along with feet, necks, and gizzards. Yup I'm feeling farmer today. Took me about two hours.

I've got a chick I may have to cull. I have never, EVER killed a chick.. his butt is turning inside out though.. getting worse and worse. He/she is still active and eating but very, very small compared to the others. It looks like the actual vent opening is too small and it's prolapsing every time it poops >_< Keeping vaseline on it, so it wont get crusty again.. as soon as it looks to be suffering, I will have to do something.

Welcome to the new folks!

For putting chicks down, the easiest way for me is sharp pruning shears. Dig the hole first, cut the neck with the shears and drop in the hole. It's still hard on me, but the chick goes peacefully.

I've not had to kill a chick yet but I've had to kill small kittens before and had found a blunt trauma to the head seems to be instant and involve no blood, which really made it easier for me and seemed to get the job done quickly. If I had to do a chick, I'd do it in much the same way...hold by the legs and swing hard against a hard object like the edge of a table or door, hitting the head against it. Instant death.

That is how my Dad taught us to kill trout. Works very well.

I suspect the other chicks are making it worse by grooming the poor thing. I should separate them, we lack a second heat source... but they hardly use the heat plate during the day.

I get conflicting results attempting to sex them (they're barred rock). If it's a little pullet, that may spell trouble for her laying future and I may be best off ending it now, rather than waste time/effort/food on a pullet that wont be able to lay. A little cockeral could be raised until he's crowing size (as long as he's not suffering). It's eating, drinking, pooping and doing the same chick things as the others...

*laugh* trying to reason with myself, it seems. Logical course of action is separate, see if it changes anything, if not, well...

Same here. I watch the folks on TV shows start cutting into fish while they are still flopping and trying to skin them and all and I often wonder why in the world don't they kill them first?
It is much less cruel to kill them first and then cut into them. There is a myth that they do not feel pain.

They do feel pain so we need to minimize that pain and thank God for allowing us to eat that fish.
