These posts on raising chicks out doors is so encouraging. Thank you for sharing.

I live in the "high desert" of New Mexico and have been trying to figure out how to raise meat birds when spring night temps get below freezing into June (hard for little ones) but by then days are 80+ (hard for big ones).

I need to do some rethinking and scheming but I think these suggestions make it possible!

Thank you, thank you!
Perhaps raise them in the last summer, starting them when it is warm and finishing them as the weather cools. Mine can take the cold better as 2-4 months old than the summer heat.

Yah I kept mina as long as they were growing . . .

Depending on the Barring, they may be sex linked with boys looking different from the girls. I am not clear on how much barring is involved with your partridge though.i can't get my pics to download for some reason but some have a dark stripe down middle and some brown don't know which would be which but hope the darker stripes mean boy since there is 2 of them and 4 lighter

The pretty ones are harder for sure to do, but when it comes down to it a chicken is a chicken. A rare breed is only worth more if someone wants it. I had an araucana very pretty coloring, good for breeding for SOP, almost never found a home for him.

Well, kicked the babies out. Got tired of the noise and mess and they were starting to eat the puppy pads. I'm pretty sure every single one of them is a little cockeral

Don't buy straight run from TSC.

They got the heat plate, so they'll be fine.

In good news, they look huge and they're only 3 weeks old. Momma gonna have herself some good eatin'

Two white rocks (already got two hens.. they're fabulous birds), they're MASSIVE. Hubby thinks we got cornish X on accident, but I don't think so, they don't have the wide set legs. Four barred rocks.. thinking 2-3 are boys for sure, one is a maybe, hard to tell. They all look like little T-rexes.. never had them look so rediculous before. They're 50% leg

There's a LOT of chest bumping and jumping on eachother. Rowdy bunch, for sure. My last batch was all boys and they didn't get this rowdy.

So are the dark stripe down the middle a boy in brahma? I have two weeks until I process my first rooster, kinda want to get it over with but kinda glad I have a few weeks.

I'm just amazed at how much these meaties eat. They are 2 weeks old and have eaten about 40 pounds of feed. (for 25 birds) I'm keeping track of how many 50lb bags they go through. And they are drinking a gallon a day now.
