I bought a straight run of beautiful Black Copper Maran chicks, and now that they are full grown, I have a number of roos that are not doing me any favors. Tried putting them on craigslist, but now, with not much interest, going to put them in the freezer, hate to, but have to. I have looked everywhere for poultry processors in our area and cannot find any. Do you know of anyone willing to process poultry in southeast Oh? Thought about doing it myself, but after watching multiple youtube videos, I would rather work with someone first to learn so as not to inhumanely dispatch these birds. Any info is GREATLY appreciated!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

I would checkout your state thread as well as apppa.org to see if there is someone near you. It sounds like you're looking for a mentor. You can also checkout the featherman rental locator. Odds are if they rent equipment, they might be willing to mentor.

The best videos for processing the birds are Joel and Daniels Salatin. Daniel is more educational and Joel is more entertaining. Also, there are good ones on the Featherman website. It's not difficult to do.

Thank you! I have watched many salatin videos and realize I can do this myself, I just need a little confidence the first time so I make sure that I am humanely dispatching and not causing suffering. Thank you for the advice. I did not realize there is a "state thread"...not sure how to find that, but research is always a good thing!

Here's the Ohio thread... There are a lot of ways to get it done. I choose to do it like Joel, but I take a little more time. Once the bird is in the cone, I extend its neck and will find the appropriate blood vessel by rubbing its neck and moving the feathers. Invariably, the chicken will close its eyes and go to sleep, then with an extremely sharp knife one deliberate and deep cut. If I do it right, the bird will never wake up.
