Production Red

Is production red the same breed as Rhode Island Red .. or is there some significant difference ??

I asked the same question several weeks ago. My understanding is that the Pro Red is genetically enhanced to be the number one brown egg producer for for the egg production companies. It was enhanced from the RIR breed.

I learned it from this forum. I have a Pro Red and I feel like I saved her from a life in a battery cage. I don't think she is really pretty but she is much more friendly than my leghorn that is also breed for the egg production in factories.

I think that the RIR would be prettier if you get it from a breeder that shows them. I know their are clubs and groups that try to set sttandards for the breed. The Pro Red is an egg producing machine and that is the way it is judged by its egg production. The breeds of RIR would also breed for personality I imagine. The Pro Red as a breed is for the battery cages a short life focused on its egg production. I am against the inhumane treatment of animals for food production that is one reason we got chickens. I am currently still eating mass produced factory farm eggs though. I don't want to say anymore on that as it might start a mean streak on the thread and get it shut down.

I believe that a Production Red roo is only about 5 pounds at maturity. My RIR rooster was not anywhere close to being that small.

Part of the "production" traits in production strains have to do with feed conversion to eggs. In a controlled environment - small size can keep feed costs down.

My RIR was a gentleman but I've heard enuf of the opposite on BYC to understand that this isn't usually the case with the breed. I don't think that production strains are necessarily lacking in personality just as my RIR roo wasn't necessarily mean.

The smaller size of the PR and the reputation of the RIR may be considerations.

im not really looking for egg production im just looking for a good house pet ... i have 2 already and the feed store has pro R in and i wanted RIR so i was wonding if they were the same in plumage and personality ... but i guess youve answered my question ... ill hold off till RIR...

Production reds are lighter in colour--closer to that of a New Hampshire than of a RIR, and as has been said, is a smaller bird than an exhibition strain.

If you're looking for a house pet, there are better choices, at least in my opinion.

For a pet, I assume your #1 priority is personality, and that other considerations high on your list will be the visual appeal and egg laying. Check out Henderson's Breed Chart to narrow down the breeds you prefer or wish to avoid.
