This question goes out to all you goose gurus out there. Carrosaur comments that she hopes her future goslings will be "as people friendly as Pear". Being a first timer myself and anticipating the coming mating and (hopefully) hatching season as much as all of you I am curious. As friendly as Sting (gander) and his girls are right now what can we anticipate when there is a nest with eggs much less when there are little goslings running about. Will their friendliness toward us reduce during this period? Is there something we should do to prepare ourselves for this?
Thanks.
It´s going to be a little less during broody time, as their eggs become the most precious thing to them. However, my 3 imprinted geese let me put my hand in to check eggs, help myself to goslings, etc, and as long as I spend a lot of time with them, I can have very tame goslings too. I´ve found that my goslings, even with parents that are nervous, don´t follow the lead of the parents for long. They soon learn that I´m nice and give food, and they come to me, parents hissing in the background, and woof down their feed.
so, no reason you shouldn´t be able to have tame goslings, whether you have nervous parents that hiss and go, or whether your geese are really easy to handle. all down to you, really.
Of course, if you want imprinted goslings, then that´s another matter....
p.s., not that Im a goose guru, just my experience.
