Nothing that needs immediate attention, yet. But, we've been having problems mostly with people leaving excess fishing lines and equipment around. We had a duck get strangled by fishing line recently.

Perhaps one thing you can give me suggestions on is what the easier way to catch a wild duck that has fishing line wrapped on it's legs or has a hook in it's bill without doing more damage or getting into trouble. There is no game warden at the lake that I go to and lake staff is often unavailable or do very little to help.

I forgot to add that most of these ducks are friendly and will come up to you, but they are smart enough to know when you want to catch them.

Do you have any authority on this lake? Because on some local lakes near me you can only use bright coloured fishing line so when people leave line around even when it's in the water it's easier to see, but the eat thing is to get the line before it's left behind wait for the fisherman to leave and search their swim for line and hooks and other fishing gear, but if there is a duck with line tangled up you will need a team of around 3 more the better a net and some treats for the duck. You could always make appeal of some sort to stop fishing on the lake ? It's worked in the past.

Isn't this on the public forum? Everytime a new post is posted it is there on the general forum for those who would like to look. If it stays active and we keep it going then more people will recognize it and come for advice. Threads move fast here though. Now that I have posted I can go to "show your posts" and any current activity will be shown. That's how they work.

Darlene,

I did a simple google search for fishing line recycling programs
http://www.google.com/search?q=fish...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

When we fish we pick up what we can. Everyone should. Personal responsibility is better than closing off fishing to everyone.

Jennifer at Carolina Waterfowl Rescue I believe has info to get things started.
You can contact her here

She is busy right now with lots of rescues and emergency situations, but I am sure she will help. She is an awesome lady.

PA Chickenlover, it is never too late to use a broody to hatch. As long as the broody will stand the time, she will do fine.

Hey, I have a friend that raised all those breeds, and he told me that you should not keep Magellans with anything, they are not a community bird. They are like Egyptians but more powerful. Another friend of mine bought a pair from him and the male killed one of her Male Africans. Hope that helps...

I don't have any authority with the lake, but I do have friends involved with the lake and I also publish articles about problems at the lake. When I'm there, I pick up anything that could harm the animals, but I can't be there all day and some people sneak in at night to poach fish after the place is closed. Plus, I try to talk to people about picking up their lines, not feeding bread, not throwng rocks etc. Very few people listen and most either get an attitude with me or get downright nasty and/creepy. Signs don't work either.

There is a small group of people who want to get fishing banned at the lake, but I don't think that's a good idea. Plus, I don't think it would work. I'm sure the city likes getting the money in lake fees, especially in this economy. I've heard that it's mostly the inexperienced fishermen and kids that are the worst offenders. They used to only allow limited fishing at the lake until a few years ago, but most of the restrictions were on boat fishing, not shore fishing, which is where a lot of the problem is. They have a recycling program for fishing lines and it has helped, but so many people are still careless with their lines and even leave them laying around only a few yards from a receptacle.

I think the solution is that we need at least a part time ranger in the area, but our city can't afford one. We had one there a long time ago and it was nice because I didn't have to worry so much about the animals. They would be there more than any average visitor could be.

Thanks, also, to Terrielacy..

Don't quote me on it destin but i'm pretty sure some of their tamer magellans where housed with some 1-2 smaller species in a large flight.
