I'd recommend learning about the predators that are actually in your area. We have to build bear proof because they are *possible* in our area. We for sure have racoons, possums, bobcats, hawks and eagles ( plus all sorts of poisonous and non poisonous snakes).
The foundation for our pen is chain link. We have planned a deer fence layer on top and hardware cloth on the sides of the pen PLUS hardware cloth running along the outside edges & permanently fastened in the ground.
We also have bird netting (which we have learned from experience is really good at stopping snakes.) which may be placed on top of the hardware cloth for extra security.
The early weeks of using it on our foraging pen stopped at 4.5 foot long rat snake from getting through the other protective measures to my birds. We rescued it from the netting and set it free. It has not been back since.
