DH and I have been thinking we need a long term project with our peafowl so we've decide to try to breed out a Buford Bronze Blackshoulder White Eyed. We do currently have all we need to get to this, although it's obviously going to take some time! Wanted to post out thoughts here and get some feedback from the experts. ANY and ALL input is welcome! I know we have a lot of experts on here and we really value your guidance.
We currently have 12 total but 4 of those are not in the 'plan' and are actually for sale (PM me if anyone is interested in them, pics are on my BYC page).
BS pair
Buford Bronze pair
Buford Bronze split to BS hen
SP pair
White yearling hen
IB yearling pair
Spalding pied yearling peacock
Purple BS yearling peacock
In spring we plan to divide them up into three pens:
pen 1:SP pair plus white female
pen 2: BS pair
pen 3: Bronze pair plus BS split bronze hen
To be sold: IB pair, Spalding pied and Purple BS.
We hope to first get Bronze BS and then add in the white eye.
If our calculations are correct (and here is where I look to DH as I tend to get twisted up)...
pen 1 will produce from SP pair 25% white, 75% SP and then from SP/white 50% white and 50% SP (is this right?
).
pen 2 will produce all BS.
pen 3 will produce bronze from bronze pair and from bronze x BS split bronze 50% bronze split to BS and 50% split bronze split BS.
thinking to add a BS white eye hen to pen 2 to produce BS white eye. We could also put a BS white eye in pen 3 to get split bronze split BS white eye.
Out of these pairs we would look to keep any of the bronze split to BS and any BS white eye or split bronze split BS white eye (depending on which pen the hen goes to).
anyone still with me???
So out of the chicks we keep, fast forward 3 years and we will create new pens with the following
pen 4: split bronze split BS white eye pen
pen 5: split bronze split BS and bronze split to BS to solidify just the BS trait.
from those pens this is where our percentages get hazy...
pen 4: bronze white eye, bronze BS white eye, IB white eye, IB BS white eye and splits to all those combinations.
pen 5: bronze BS, IB, IB BS, bronze and splits.
of these we would keep any bronze BS white eye (of course-that's the end goal! LOL) and bronze BS.
Whew! ambitious project I know and long term but the very idea of this excited both DH and I. He is a scientist and is loving all the genetics, I'm a hatchaholic and loving all the hatching. it's a win-win for us!
Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions...anything?
