this is so terrible. There was a huge pile of poop with feathers--I pulled it out.

Then I saw the egg shell. Then I cleaned her up, sporayed her with vetericyn....closed cage with food and water.

THEN--I saw the red thing--large grape size--red matter inside.
\What can I do--I think it is her kidney

I think I may have killed her by pulling on the ball of feathers..... or maybe it came out with the prolapse.

It's likely a lash egg, a type of reproductive infection, can you get pictures?

The kidneys are far up underneath the pelvic bone, tucked tightly into a small depression on either side. When I'm butchering a chicken, the kidneys NEVER come out with the rest of the guts. You have to press your thumb into the depression to push them out. Besides, they are only attached to the cloaca by very long, thin tubes. If you had pulled out a kidney, you'd have pulled out the cloaca and probably most of the oviduct along with it.

So no, I doubt it was a kidney. More likely a "lash egg" or a mass of infected tissue her body was sloughing off.
