Hi!
I've got a almost 2 year old Easter Egger who appears to have a problem we can't diagnose:
This past Saturday, my daughter found her in the coop with her vent looking raw & poopy. We immediately brought her in the house, and tried to clean her up. I washed/cut off the soiled feathers. When I wiped anywhere near her vent, she began to strain & push the insides of her vent out - looking like a prolapse - but it all went back in once she calmed down. (Almost like human contractions during labor.)
We did a little reading, and decided she was egg bound, so tried a warm bath followed by heating pad in her box. But it didn't feel as though there is an egg caught inside.
For the next couple of days, she would do the "straining" things from time to time (she makes a noise that my daughter calls the "pushing" noise), but has since stopped that completely, and seems to be more active (tries to get out of cage, makes cooing noises, etc.).
She has been in a darkened box indoors w/ a heating pad, and has been drinking water w/electrolytes and eating yogurt w/crumbled pellets. I did give her crushed calcium as I read it may help contractions to push out a really big egg, but again, there doesn't seem to be an egg inside. She has not layed any eggs, and has lost a few feathers.
Now what? Could there be an egg inside? Should I let her outdoors near the rest of the flock (I'd keep her separated because below the vent is a bit red & missing feathers I trimmed off. Or should she be kept in the dark for a while longer?
Or is there something else going on that I'm totally missing?!!
Help!!
