Prolapse Question

i just started treating my silkie hen for prolapse.i cleaned the area and put honey on it.i pushed it back in and held it for about a minute.i have her in a caged covered over with a towel to help keep her calm and to hopefully stop her from laying.how long should i keep her in the dark?how many times a day should i put the honey on the prolapse and push it back in?

also,she has poo stuck to the prolapse i cant get off.ive used warm water and dawn detergent and it still wont come off.any ideas? will that cause an infection?

I don't know what to tell you to use to clean it, but you definitely need it clean.

When the tissue hangs outside the body for a little while it starts to dry out. It looks dark reddish/black. That is likely what it is. I would not pull on it AT ALL unless you become sure it is not her flesh!! It will break it open and then she will have a real wound. You need to keep it moist all the time so that tissue can repair itself. I had a very similar situation and after a time, that outer layer started to come loose, like dead skin pealing off. Just keep it moist and it will do the work itself. You do need to keep it clean, though. I rinsed my girls a couple of times a day b/c she too had this thin yellow/white discharge for a time. I totally agree with the honey...I used it on mine and she did great! My vet recommended keeping her in the dark all the time for @ 5 days or so ( I am underestimating b/c i can not remember the time he stated to me, but I remember thinking it seemed like a LONG time!). I was having a hard time with it, and would take her out for walks in the evening, though. He said to reduce her food intake to just a little bit of grain. That seems mean too, but they have reserves. ( I let my girl catch a few bugs, shhh!)
I'd use the honey until you feel like her flesh is clean of funk, then u can just use a lubricant...KY, vaseline.
Has she relapsed since you pushed it back in??
If the stuff you were describing is her flesh and not poo then she may be swollen. I have read that Prep-H can help with reducing that, if it is an issue. But if it has stayed put since you pushed it back, then I would stay with the honey! Hope she is doing well...

I would start with the first with the soap and water like you did and then soak her whole bottom end in a warm sitz bath of epsom salts. Do this 2x/day. When you get it to shrink try to put it back up there with honey, ky, or hemorrhoid cream. The sitz will clean it and shrink it. If you have a hen with a prolapse like I mine had she would repetitively poo on it. Also after a few days the injured tissue from her pecking it was turning necrotic/dying so make sure she cannot pick at it or any other birds sokeep her isolated and in a dark room so she does not feel the need to lay as much. I used the honey, sitz baths, hemorrhoid cream and sticking the prolapse back in did not work for my hen because she couldn't stop bearing down. I finally broke down and took her to the vet. The vet said that it was impossible to tell if she was bearing down due to the next egg being on its way out or poo stuck and unable to be moved out. Basically she said $500 plus for surgery and the stitches might rip out b/c of the bearing down. The vet though offered to for me to donate her for a class she was taking to remove birds ovaries. She would be a not laying hen anymore lol. I never found out if she did make it. The vet also said that even a little necrotic tissue is okay if you can get the prolapse back in and get it to stay there, it will heal. Hope your luck is better than mine! Here's a pick of my hens prolapse.

Of course, the jab was this was my only 1y/o BLRW hen. She laid 10 eggs before prolapsing and I incubated all thank God and got 3 roos and 1 hen! lol So it starts again...and I have bunches of roos! lol

i really apprecite the responses.i can push the prolapse back in very easily,and it seems to stay in as im putting her back in her cage,but when i go back and check its back out.the stuff stuck to the prolapse is yellow and white so i assumed it was poo.she has no trouble pooing..lol 50 times a day.how often should i push the prolapse back in a day?

Mine was bearing down really hard and had a big mass of tissue that was bulging. Hers kept coming back out as well. The vet and I held hers in for hours and finally figured the only way to get it to stay would be to put a circle stitch in all the way around the vent opening. He used disolvable stitches and left it open enough for her to be able to pass poo.
I wonder if giving it time and letting some of the swelling to go down will help??? Mine was our pet of them all, of course, so I was quick to seek help! I wonder had I given her time how it would have worked out.
You could just pour some warm water over her bum to let that liquidy poo come loose. And be sure it is still lubricated. I know how it is to think you will have to soak them 10 times in a day. But a good warm bath in Epson salts once a day or so would help the area. Chicks have higher body temp than us so I would use pretty warm water...warmer it is, the better it will work.
I would push it back in as often as you can.
You know, I just remembered the vet was using table sugar on her to try to reduce the swelling...that is what made me use the honey once I got home b/c honey also has the good antibacterial properites!! I'd keep that on there too as often as you can. I know it is a lot, but it is worth it to save your girl!

I was interested that the vet was using sugar instead of something "medicinal" for the swelling.. I included that b/c I think the honey will do the job, and u will not need any prep-h! Less is more sometimes! ...per your last message ..."acv" - what is this??
