My sapphire gem developed a prolapse on Sunday. She lays gigantic eggs and we think that’s what caused it. Once we found it we started soaking her in medicated soap and then epsom salt to soften and clean it. She had lots of poop stuck in it which we cleaned out. We applied prep h and pushed it back in. Monday it was back again so repeat...Tuesday back and repeat. It looks terrible to me and parts of it seem a little dry. We tried creating a sling (as seen in another article) but just can’t get it to stay on. I just don’t know at what point we are just making ourselves feel better and delaying the inevitable. Every time she poops it just pops back out. Will it ever get better??

Can you post any pictures of her vent while cleaned up? With a prolapse, when the red tissue is outside, it needs to be kept moist with a luricant, such as honey, oil, creams, or ointment. If any of the tissue gets dry, it can die. Sometimes soaking the prolapse in warm Epsom salts water or other disinfectants, can help along with removal of of the dead tissue. It can be frustrating, since it can take days for the prolapse to stay inside. Some hens may need to be put down if they do not get better, or get a necrotic or infected vent. You might want to stop her from laying temporarily by keeping her in the dark for 16 hours per day, allowing her out in the light for 8 hours daily to eat drink and walk around. Here is some reading about causes and treatment of a prolapse:

I willl get some pictures when we start again tomorrow. She is in low light with lots of water and reduced protein to stop her laying. When it’s in it looks perfect but when it’s out not so much. It will stay-ish until she tries to poop (which is always bcuz she’s a chicken and that’s what they do lol) and then right back out. She has prep h on it and around it but I will add some coconut oil tomorrow as well.

One of mine got a prolapse, It never got cured. she actually died of natural causes. but not because she has prolapse.

in my experience stopping her laying is key, it has a chance to repair and restore then. I have had two prolapse and recover without further intervention after the initial clean up. You could just step back and let her take over, assuming you have already stopped her laying by reducing the light and protein as you reported. Good luck!

No eggs since Monday and she had two soft ones that day. If I could just get her to stop trying to poop we would be golden lol

It is fairly common for the prolapse to come back out when straining to poop or lay an egg. Hopefully, it will go back in on it’s own. It can take 3-4 days to stop laying completely, but she needs to be in the dark for about 16 hours a day. That will already reduce her intake of food. Once she stops laying for a couple of days, then you can let her back out. In my experience with breaking broodies, it can take a week or two for them to start laying again. Do you see any necrotic or black tissue on the prolapse?
