I have two laying hens that suffered from a blow out/prolapsed vent. The other chickens attacked their vents and left them a bloody mess. I separated them from teh rest. One of the hens developed thrush. I washed them both off, treated the vents with coconut oil mixed with lavendar, oregano and tea tree oils, put ACV in their drinking water and added yogurt to their feed. They are back to normal now and eating fine. The feathers on their bum are not fluffy thus exposing their vent. When should I reintroduce these hens back to teh flock and how do I do it to minimize reinjury. These two hens are at the bottom of the pecking order.

Can you post a couple pictures? Are the vents still red, or calmed down, if that makes sense. Are the feathers not fluffy because they're wet? If so, maybe try blow drying them off.

Completely calmed down. Not red and inflammed at all. I used the coconut oil with the essential oils. I bathed the hens last night on their bum to get the coconut oil off. They are completely dry. The feathers have fluffed up a bit so it may just be residual oil. I clipped some of the feathers of the one that had thrush just to give her some relief while she was healing from prolapse to keep from having to be messed with so much back there.

Of course my daughter yelled to the neighbours we were giving the chickens a bath-as if we were not weird enough already LOL I can only imagine using a hair dryer. I think I'd bring them inside for that. :)
