Hi guys. Well, I suffered my first casualty at three minutes to eight tonight. My heart is broken. Trying to remain strong for the rest of them though.

Maybe this batch of silver spangled hamburgs just isn't very hearty. My other one now seems to have a prolapsed vent. Second picture isn't very clear, but it's just to show how far the vent sticks out.

After his sister passed away I decided to check on the rest of them and he had a huge ball of poop dried to his bottom. I soaked it in warm wet paper towel to remove the bulk of the poop, then cleaned the rest of it off under a steady stream of warm water (no, he's not soaking wet. I was very careful to get just his vent area). After cleaning him up I applied some hydrocortisone cream to his vent (which he didn't seem to care for) and then I melted some coconut oil on my finger and spread that on the vent as well. I tried to hold it in, but every time he peeps it pops back out. Not sure how severe it is. I'm so afraid he's going to die too. He pooped once while in my had. See picture. Light brown with white and some poop juice? Looks like nutridrench water color.

Anyway, is there anything else I can do for him at this point? I'm taking the day off of work tomorrow to monitor him and the rest of the babies. I have heard of using white oak bark to make a salve to put on it. I think I have some near my house. Can get some as soon as the sun comes up. Would like advice on what to do with it.

Also, should I alter what they're eating? Right now they have unlimited dry food. Unlimited nutridrench water, a dish of wet mash provided daily. They've also eaten a scrambled egg. I gave them a cucumber slice, but I don't think they were brave enough to eat any of it.

Any suggestions are welcome. I don't want any more of them dying on my watch. I feel like such a failure as a mother. :hit

Hi, AmyJane. Very sorry for the other one, it was wry neck "she's bending her neck backwards" you did everything right, not your fault.

It's not really prolapsed, in a prolapse it turns inside out, it is a little inflamed. Please no more hydrocortisone cream, it's immunosuppressive. Coconut oil is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, nice and soothing and it 'll probably be enough. Here's the recipe

The real chore is cleaning the coffee grinder. I really don't think you'll need it. :)

Thanks. Glad I at least didn't miss out on doing something really obvious. I know some deaths are unavoidable/to be expected. It's just hard not to feel bad when you have these little tiny babies who are completely dependent on you. I loved her so much, and I feel like I let her down.

She didn't start bending her neck backwards until the gaping got pretty bad. I think it was just part of dying. She hadn't bent her neck weirdly at all prior to that. Don't they have a bent neck for a while prior to dying if it's wry neck? I'm not familiar with it.

So glad to hear it's just inflamed. I'll put on some more coconut oil in the morning. They're all sleeping now and I'd hate to disturb them. He needs his rest. I didn't know the cream was bad. I had heard it was now the better option over hemorrhoid cream (the outdated method).

Thanks for the oak bark post. I'm saving it in my first aid manual.

Well... I like to be truthful, so I must say... they'll always be completely dependent on you, and your love and attachment will only grow... But it's a very rewarding hobby.

I think that's kind of the way of things when you have pets. Some people don't think it's worth the sadness when they die, but I don't think those people can fathom the joy that they bring to our lives as well. It far outweighs the bad.
