Prolapsed Vent

Anything else I can be doing to help shrink the tissue? I also didn’t get the calcium into her this morning, will try again later. It’s a little easier to get a pill into a sick chicken than a feisty one!

I have used prep h on prolapsed vents with success. I also keep my hens inside in a small kennel in a dim room so their bodies rest and are not trying to lay eggs while the tissue retracts. She might not be happy about it but it might be worth a try since she has been prolapsed for a few days now. If she stays prolapsed that tissue can become necrotic and honey/ sugar on her outside is a recipe for flystrike and you don't want to go down that road. It's just awful. I hope she recovers for you!

A little better, the honey is shrinking the tissue but I can’t get the prolapse to stay in. She hates the baths and just wants to be out chickening, at least the others are leaving her alone. She also laid an egg yesterday, so maybe that will help.

I'm glad it's starting to go down a little.

If she doesn't like soaking, then I'd omit that, no need to add stress to the situation.

You can try holding warm epsom salts soaked compresses on the tissue to see if that makes a difference.

With a prolapse, the tissue is irritated and swollen, it takes time for inflammation to go down.

Getting the Calcium directly into her is very important, so do your best with that. Calcium helps with contraction and retention and the Extra plays a role in healing a prolapse.

I'm sure she's quite bored, hopefully she can settle down a bit, relax and heal fairly quickly.

If you were to want to stop production, then you'd need to keep her in a completely dark room for 16hrs a day for several weeks in order for production to cease. Hopefully it will not come to that. If she's able to expel an egg now, that's a good thing.
