Prolapsed Vent

Anything else I can be doing to help shrink the tissue? I also didn’t get the calcium into her this morning, will try again later. It’s a little easier to get a pill into a sick chicken than a feisty one!

I have used prep h on prolapsed vents with success. I also keep my hens inside in a small kennel in a dim room so their bodies rest and are not trying to lay eggs while the tissue retracts. She might not be happy about it but it might be worth a try since she has been prolapsed for a few days now. If she stays prolapsed that tissue can become necrotic and honey/ sugar on her outside is a recipe for flystrike and you don't want to go down that road. It's just awful. I hope she recovers for you!

A little better, the honey is shrinking the tissue but I can’t get the prolapse to stay in. She hates the baths and just wants to be out chickening, at least the others are leaving her alone. She also laid an egg yesterday, so maybe that will help.

I'm glad it's starting to go down a little.

If she doesn't like soaking, then I'd omit that, no need to add stress to the situation.

You can try holding warm epsom salts soaked compresses on the tissue to see if that makes a difference.

With a prolapse, the tissue is irritated and swollen, it takes time for inflammation to go down.

Getting the Calcium directly into her is very important, so do your best with that. Calcium helps with contraction and retention and the Extra plays a role in healing a prolapse.

I'm sure she's quite bored, hopefully she can settle down a bit, relax and heal fairly quickly.

If you were to want to stop production, then you'd need to keep her in a completely dark room for 16hrs a day for several weeks in order for production to cease. Hopefully it will not come to that. If she's able to expel an egg now, that's a good thing.

Thank you for the help, she tolerates the soaks but certainly doesn’t enjoy them. I’m having the worst luck with the calcium, but will keep trying, and ticking her off ☹️

I do have a vet appointment for tomorrow if this doesn’t improve much today. I’m not sure what a vet can do though besides get the calcium into her.

It may take time for the swelling to go down. It might take some more patience. I’m sure it is frustrating. Some vets can place a purse string stitch to hold a prolapse in. A few vets might give a hormone implant that can stop laying for up to 4-6 months. Some people say that it is hard to get those. That might be something you could do if available since she is on her second prolapse. As Wyorp Orp said you can use a compress on her, and you also may just spray off her vent to keep her clean. I have never used Pam olive or vegetable oil spray for something like this, but that could be good for keeping it from drying out.

Thanks! I’m not known for patience ☹️ It’s been 3 years since her first prolapse, but it definitely consider the implant. She’s winding down her egg laying for the season anyway.

I edited my post above and added the part about possibly spraying her vent with Pam. That might be more tolerated than handling it. Some use that for scaly leg mites. But the spray could scare her I suppose.
