Prom attire

I live in a 'poor' community where it is often a challenge for some kids to get enough money for the prom tickets. I would hate to see a youth not attend their prom because they couldnt afford the clothes.

That being said, my home community as a teenager was a 'poor' farming community. My date wore a white dress shirt and a pair of new jeans. He looked very nice.

A kilt, as long as they are respectful and not being lewd about it is fine. Girls in suits, as long as they are in a nice suit, is fine too.
I don't like the jeans and a t-shirt, or weird spiked collars, chains and belts attire for prom.
Prom is a formal event and should be treated as such. Does that mean spending hundreds of dollars? Heck no! Spend a ton of money on your wedding, not prom. You can get very nice formal dresses without spending a boatload of money, same for nice formal suits.

For the amount of teens blowing prom way out of proportion, there seems to be the same amount of teens who also want it less formal and more catered to their personal tastes and a lot of overlap in those groups.

What ever is considered "dressy" in your community. Down in the Florida Keys, dressy means no holes in the pants, close-toed shoes (with socks), and not logos or images on the shirt. Here is the DC Metro area, it means full formal wear.

I would totally think it would be OK to wear a kilt to prom, either gender. (as long as it wasn't a really short one)
Heck, I'm Northern European, and I wear cultural blouses all the time.
A girl in a suit at a prom seems a bit odd- I'd say OK for buisnesswear, but not for prom.

I would also vote None of the above, unless the boy wearing a kilt does so because of heritage and not just as a joke to see if he can. It would have to be tastefully worn. I think maybe the idea of formal dress is not understood by todays youth.

I think a kilt is perfectly acceptable, and rather hot actually!
Now if all those ''emo'' and goth kids would just dress normal for once.....

I have no issue with Gothic clothing, as in Gothic Victorian inspired. I also have no issue with one complete outfit that at least fits together in a sensible way. But the extent of stupid looking things a lot of kids wear and do to themselves just baffles me. A lot of them look like they have taken a stapler to their face and a lawn mower dipped in neon paint to their heads.
Not all of them are stuck in black and gray clothes, some where obnoxious colors, and are dressed in enough clothing pieces to make 3 or 4 outfits. It's like they have a hard time picking one look for the day so they put all the ones they like on at the same time.

And all this is coming from a 21 year old that should be defending these looks (so sayeth the society my generation listens to)!

Completely a personal choice - should matter only to the person who has to wear it.

My uncle is a professional photographer. One of the proms he did (on Cape Cod) all the girls showed up in formal gowns and combat boots.

I think all the options are ok. Prom is suppose to be fun. It is there prom an they should wear what they want. There are too many times in life where you have to conform to someone elses standards. Prom is suppose to be your night, how can it feel that way if you are not allowed to dress like yourself.

I went with black jeans, black button down shirt, new bolo tie, chrome chain belt, new hat an polished my boots. My date approved, dont care if anyone else did.
